The first time I made this model was in1960, prior to joining the Coast Guard. The second time was about 10 years ago. The third time was just this month. I made it for a friend who served in the Coast Guard about the same time I did. I don't remember who manufactured the first kit. But Glencoe made the second two. Good quality kit. Very accurate. The pictures show the model made 10 years ago. "Old Coastie" Larry

I've owned several, this one I sent to a retired coast guard officer who served as commander of the Port Orford Lifeboat Station which employed these boats until the station closed in the mid-1960s. One of the two boats followed him to the Winchester Bay, OR, Coast Guard Station, where it was refurbished and It's the only one on the market... It has its challenges in holding the hull together while gluing, but it has decent detail and does represent the real craft faithfully. The boat includes its twin diesel engines which are not visible when the craft is fully assembled "for action," but a creative modeler could work up ways to reveal the engine compartment interior and make the craft more a more interesting display.

It plastic, so I guess you get what you pay for. That said, the manufacturer obviously doesn't care cause most pieces are not symmetrical, do not fit in the holes provided, and do not match up perfectly. You can hide a lot of the problems with paint and glue. The sad part is, there aren't many o scale coast guard ships out there that look more realistic than a lego boat, so you're really pigeon holed if you need this particular size. See photos for more info.

It’s a fine little kit and I would have given it five stars if: (1) it had included appropriate decals (boat number, boat name, flag and U.S. Coast Guard name) and (2) a decent stand. I can improvise a decent stand, but the complete lack of decals is a real drawback.

One of the easier yet entertaining 1/48 scale replica of a US Coast Guard Cutter Rescue Boat ! The first one I built I was actually able to get a 148 scale engine inside of it ! This is my second one !
