Even six years later, the Xeon 5500 and 5600-series CPUs are still overkill for many tasks. Given how the 4C/8T SKUs are mostly in the $15-50 range, I would strongly recommend picking up one or two if a good deal on an LGA1366 motherboard comes along. Just don't drop $300-500 on a motherboard. Now for those caveats: If that good deal happens to be on a server motherboard (5500/5520 chipset, as opposed to x58 on most desktop boards), you will likely need ECC RAM. This isn't a big deal if you already planned to buy RAM, as it's priced close enough to non-ECC RAM, but do some research on the board if you happen to have gobs of DDR3 oozing out of your walls. The second issue is that server boards have a wider backplate that's often epoxied to the PCB. Unlike the standard square backplate on most desktop boards, the server backplate has wings that are threaded for M3 screws, while many coolers use 6-32 screws. Depending on the cooler, you can get creative with M3 standoffs on coolers that already use standoffs. This is a nice boost from the original 2.33 Ghz Processor my xServe had originally, I will be ordering a second Processor as I have found a good deal on a replacement logic board with Dual sockets and 12 RAM slots.

I bought 2 of them for using with a lenovo Thinkstation D20 motherboard. When I checked capacitors and pads of the processors, I found dregs of solder paste, which had been used for repair the chips. Except this cosmetic matter, the processors are working perfectly even with my load test. These are very good items for the price.
