Notes
With wit and wisdom, Stephanie Bettman's debut album, Get Close To Me, explores many facets of the nature of the human heart. Sometimes sad, sometimes sassy, she delves into the subject of emotional connection, not just one to another, but also to oneself, and to all. The eleven songs, which comprise Get Close To Me, reflect a dry sense of humor and a deep feeling for humanity, exploring perspectives on passion and pain. With her honey-sweet fiddling and her soothing soprano, Stephanie draws you in from the first notes of the title track, Get CloseTo Me. A song that invites the listener to look within and find that even "when you look into the darkness I am the light in your eyes'. Then she switches gears and turns up the heat with the punchy Seed Of Doubt showing off both her vocal prowess and her ferocious fiddle playing. This song, as well as the fiery Separate Ways and the swinging Lulu Wants To Die, are beautiful examples of Stephanie's mastery of that Bluegrass art of pairing a somber lyric with a powerful, upbeat melody. This is part of her humor; as if to say even when everything looks bleak, it's still fun to sing about. One of her most powerful themes is sometimes our greatest pain brings our greatest reward. The Letting Go and The Only Way To Love You both express viewpoints from characters who find themselves made stronger in times of personal struggle. Get Close To Me was arranged and produced by GRAMMY winning fiddler Richard Greene, who brings his avant-garde bluegrass sensibility to the album (as well as a some twin fiddling on track 9). Bettman and Greene, along with mixing engineer Richard Dobson, have created a production that is organic, exciting and eclectic with Bettman's voice and lyrics taking center stage and her fiddling adding a sweetness and excitement throughout. Also featuring: Luke Halpin (harmonies, mandolin, guitar), Cody Bryant (acoustic guitar), Brian Netzley (harmonies, bass) with some star cameos by Peter Thomas (drums, Elvis Costello), Mark Browne (Bass, Melissa Etheridge), and Carl Verheyen (electric guitar, Supertramp). Stephanie has been a performer for many years, though only recently as a contemporary musician. Her formal training is in theater and opera, and she worked for many years as an actress and sometimes also a screenwriter. Then more recently, her creative impulse was for circus. She worked for a few years as a trapeze and circeau artist in the greater LA area, before making the decision to pour all her efforts into music. Her efforts are appreciated, as there is no doubt Ms Bettman is an artist to watch. * 2008 Grand Prize Southern California Live Acoustic Music Competition * 2008 top 100 New Music Critiques Pick - Music Connection Magazine * 2008 Honorable Mention West Coast International Songwriting Competition * 2008 Finalist International Acoustic Music Association Songwriting Competition * 2008 Regional Finalist Mountain Stage New Song Competition *2008 Folk Alliance Regional West Premiere Showcase Artist.

- *****- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThis item arrived quickly, well-packaged. There was some very light scuffing and wear on the front cover that I hadn't seen in the picture in the ad, perhaps because it wasn't a good close-up of the cover. In any case, it's negligible, and it's overall a really nice magazine, and the seller offered to allow me to return it, so nonetheless my overall response is positive. It was just 18 bucks, including tax and shipping, so, yeah, I'd say it's a good value.
