Do it Yourself Rock and Roll Punk
Things moved fast between 1976 and 1978. Joe Strummer nailed it in the lyrics to Garageland on their debut album: "Meanwhile things are hotting up in the West End alright / Contracts in the offices, groups in the night." And these demos on Punks From The Underground are Island Records' attempts to catch up, tap in and get down with the new movement of punk. Bands were invited into the studio to see who they could sign. There was already a strong street level pub-based rock and roll scene going on at the time - check out Strummer's pre-Clash 101ers and a lot of the punk bands formed out of this scene. These tracks are demo quality - but punks love demo quality, right? There are some cracking tunes on here. The Shits and The Phantoms present particularly good tracks. Nick Kent went on to ... Nick Kent went on to become a music journalist rather than a musician and you can see why, but his tracks here are still worthy of inclusion under the punk ethos of get up and do it yourself. The Heartbreakers tracks (listed elsewhere as The Heroes) are without Johnny Thunders but stand up well anyway and still feature Walter Lure (gtr, vox) and Billy Rath (bass) from the original line up. If you're a fan of 60s Garage Rock, 70s dirty rock and roll and the late 70s punk, this will sit well in your collection.
