Synopsis
An unforgettable tale of a brave young woman during the plague in 17th century England from the author The Secret Chord and of March , winner of the Pulitzer Prize. When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna's eyes we follow the story of the fateful year of 1666, as she and her fellow villagers confront the spread of disease and superstition. As death reaches into every household and villagers turn from prayers to murderous witch-hunting, Anna must find the strength to confront the disintegration of her community and the lure of illicit love. As she struggles to survive and grow, a year of catastrophe becomes instead annus mirabilis, a "year of wonders." Inspired by the true story of Eyam, a village in the rugged hill country of England, Year of Wonders is a richly detailed evocation of a singular moment in history. Written with stunning emotional intelligence and introducing "an inspiring heroine" ( The Wall Street Journal ), Brooks blends love and learning, loss and renewal into a spellbinding and unforgettable read., "Plague stories remind us that we cannot manage without community . . . Hard Times

The Black Plague was not kind to a small English community in the 1600s, but Anna continued to grapple with circumstances. She suffered physically and emotionally although she managed to escape the dreaded disease. Anna assisted many of her neighbors as she discovered the benefits of weeds and flowers as treatment for the ill. She seemed to be God-fearing through most of the book but disappointingly had a change of heart before the book closed.

Ink Notations Throughout the Book--I Tosssed It.

I was disappointed to see so many black-ink notations (Chinese characters?) above most words on virtually every page. They were very distracting, to the point that I tossed the book in recycling rather than trying to read it. Your description led me to believe any notations/highlighting/underlining would be "minimal." Not accurate at all.

  • Author is one of the best. Weaves a riveting tale based on extensive research of the subject matter. Highly recommend this and Horse.r.

The item is exactly as portrayed. Dog ears from previous readers, but no other flaws.

  • True to life title

It is well written, but becomes more dismal and somber as it moves along. By the end it becomes even morbid, and disturbingly unrealistic I'd rather read books that are on the lighter side, especially during this Pandemic. This book was recommended to me and I do believe the majority of people would enjoy reading it. I'm probably in the minority. It does move along and holds your interest. Good luck!

  • Never again

The plague of 1666 is like no other and fortunately we are able to prevent such horrors from wiping out mankind. A must read. I have read it twice but a third reading is in the future.
