Great movie. Bad DVD. Unfortunately this version is from the early days of DVD, when black bars were hard-coded into a 4:3 picture. This is NOT native widescreen, and creates a picture quality so low, when you are forced to zoom the picture, that VHS would be a more preferable option. It might look good on a late-90s CRT TV. If you're watching on an HDTV, get the BluRay. It's not a preference, in this case, it's a necessity.

Fun, glamorous, old-style, Hollywood production about a couple of guys, one a pilot and the other a scientist, planning to win a flying race in 1940's Los Angeles. Cliff (the pilot) is trying out his new race-plane when a bunch of FBI agents, chasing a bunch of crooks, accidentally shoot his plane causing him to crash-land, destroying the plane. Peavy (the scientist) and Cliff later find what the crooks had stolen and hid in an old airplane in the hangar, a rocket suit! Cliff's girlfriend is a beautiful, aspiring, young starlet who has a bit part in a film with Nevil Sinclaire, a big-time actor (like Bogart or Gable). At a local air acrobat show, Cliff puts on the "rocket suit" and attempts to save the life of an old pilot named Malcolm who was trying to protect Cliff's job by taking his place when Cliff is late for the performance. Suddenly, the whole place is jumping! Everybody wants to know who the "Rocketeer" is. The problem is, the rocket doesn't belong to Cliff or Peavey, and the FBI is looking for it. As it turns out, so are the crooks who were hired to steal it, and a group of German Spies! Unknown to everybody else, Nevil Sinclaire is the head of the spy ring, and the Germans are trying to steal the rocket suit so that they can copy it and make flying soldiers to invade America and take over the entire world! Howard Hughes is the owner and inventor of the rocket suit, and along with Peavey and Cliff, and the mob thugs, take down Sinclaire, his German soldiers, and their Zeppelin, in the defeat of the Nazi plan. The rocket suit gets destroyed in the process, and Hughes gives Cliff a new race plane as a gift. Cliff's girlfriend rescued a copy of the rocket suit plans and gave them to Peavey. The movie ends with Cliff and his girlfriend kissing in front of the new airplane, and Peavey studying the rocket suit plans talking about how to improve it and make it really work! This was a really fun movie, and I highly recommend it for your enjoyment.Read full review

I've read many reviews saying this DVD is poor quality or 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars at the top and bottom; not this one. The resolution is actually pretty good and it's really widescreen. I've always loved this movie. It's fun and has character, before movies became 90% CGI and explosions. There is that here, but not so much you lose the people and the story.

25th Anniversary of the ROCKETEER ... in comic books, not the film! The Rocketeer was created by writer/penciller Dave Stevens. He first appeared as a back-up feature in Pacific Comics' Starslayer #2 (1982). The Rocketeer is a homage to the pulp heroes of the 1930s and 1940s, when pulps not comics ruled the fiction universe. Briefly, the Rocketeer was a stunt pilot who discovered a mysterious jet pack that allowed him to fly. His adventures were set in 1938 Los Angeles and Dave Stevens gave the adventures a retro, nostalgic feel, influenced by, among other things, the old Commando Cody movie serials and pinup diva Bettie Page. Rocketeer stories appeared as backup features from 1982 to 1995, and were published in Pacific, Eclipse Comics, Comico Comics and Dark Horse Comics. The stories gained a cult following and critical acclaim despite what turned out to be long stretches between story installments. Walt Disney Pictures released a film version starring Billy Campbell in the title role in 1991. He was very good in the role, and I discovered Jennifer Connelly for the first time in her role of the Rocketeer's girlfriend Jenny, who was modeled after Bettie Page in the comic books. (Jennifer later went on to act in the 'Hulk' movie.) The movie did not gross a big box office as Disney had expected , coming in only at 47 million domestic, so no sequel was ever filmed. This is one of my favorite 'comic book' movies, I love seeing the pre-WWII involvement of the USA on film !! MichaelRead full review
One of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen. Outstanding cast, beautiful score. Fantastic art direction, sound and visual effects. The Rocketeer was a great comic book and an even better movie. Incredible adaption of the comic series by Dave Stevens this move is a work of art that just keeps going with a heartfelt American representation of 40's life in rural America. It's a sweet, pleasant movie experience that in literal worlds 'Has to be seen to be believed.' Great one.
