SynopsisWith a fresh approach to a common problem, this self-help guide to overcoming back pain advocates adopting the natural, healthy posture of athletes, young children, and people from traditional societies the world over. Arguing that most of what our culture has taught us about posture is misguided-even unhealthy-and exploring the current epidemic of back pain, many of the commonly cited reasons for the degeneration of spinal discs and the stress on muscles that leads to back pain are examined and debunked. The historical and anthropological roots of poor posture in Western cultures are studied as is the absence of back pain complaints in the cultures of Africa, Asia, South America, and rural Europe. Eight detailed chapters provide illustrated step-by-step instructions for making simple, powerful changes to seated, standing, and sleeping positions. No special equipment or exercise is required, and effects are often immediate., With a fresh approach to a common problem, this self-help guide to overcoming back pain advocates adopting the natural, healthy posture of athletes, young children, and people from traditional societies the world over. • Common Sense natural back pain remedy

Just reading the front and back page give a good idea of what really should be recommended for all back, shoulder and neck pain suffers ! I am about half way through the book, and have already noticed marked relief from my ongoing Sciatica pain starting back in May, from picking up something heavy and twisting at the same time. She discusses how North American culture in the last 100 years has gotten to the point of unlearning proper posture, and now suffers because of poor posture in general and her book discusses this in length and how to relearn and get back to good health. The one big thing I've learned so far from the book, is to back off on yoga and stretches and let the injury heal, I think all the yoga and stretches continued to inflame my injury. I also based on suggestions in the book, got rid of my Pillow top mattress, and bought a nice firm futon, like she suggests, not too firm, and not too soft, the one I got is just right, and really seems to be helping after only three days of using. I pray for continued healing and will be reading the entire book and trying to incorporate her suggestions on heathly posture and stretches. This Sciatica pain is horrible and the most pain I've ever endured in my life, I can't wait till it goes away forever! Highly recommend this book to all suffers, and health care providers, PTs, Chiropracters and othes that really care about helping people, instead of just collecting fees from their patients.

  • Best in Class

I've lived with a bad back for 50 years. Discs were damaged in a rock climbing fall back when I was 16. Esther's method is great, excellent background of postures in antiquity and current cultures where physical labor is the norm. I've lived in developing countries most of my life and often wondered at the better posture of the folks I have worked with compared to back at home in the US. For a variety of reasons the US and other developed nations have neglected good posture and Esther puts us back on track. Extremely helpful are her chapters on how to sit correctly (seems like everyone should know, but clearly they do not) and on stretch positions while sleeping. Esther's approach and solutions are simple, clear, and very helpful. Like Huxley said when he read Darwin's exposition of Natural Selection: how simple, why didn't I think of that!
