Because it is a 4 year old phone, it does not have the latest version of Android installed. You need to do a whole lot of software updates via Wi-Fi before Verizon can activate it using the newer eSIM.

Although the supplier covered it with a 1 year third party warranty - I really wanted an Apple warranty. The supplier readily agreed to let me return it for a full refund. This kind of customer service is unusual (per other experiences) and kudos to standing behind the product as described. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again.
