Good is about the kindest I can be, as there are some serious problems in season 5 as any Vice fan would tell you. Apparently Don Johnson's ego and eagerness to explore really bad movies got in the way of appearing in a few episodes, which looked like pilots for youth-cop spin-offs. Tim Truman's music, as good as it is, is NOT Jan Hammer. The tone of Vice was darker the last 2 seasons, and Sonny Crockett's wardrobe looked more like what a 50-60 year old coot would wear today than hip, ultra stylish duds an undercover cop portending to be a drug dealer would wear. The cinematography of "Victims of Circumstance" featuring Karen Black as a rabid anti-Semite, was pretty awful. If one watches with attention to detail, one sees a POV from a LEVITATING CAR, crudely CG'd after the second set of elderly Jews are killed. I understand Michael Mann's interest waned after the second season, but with a change in car, wardrobe and thematic music, the show lost it's 'oopmh.' The movie of 2006 was stuck in the dark mood Mann left the show in, filmed mostly at night, as was a combination of two mediocre episodes without the chemistry, scenery or fun of the original series. Granted some of the cheesy humor of Izzy and his cohort was a bit too much, but the overall tone of the first 3 years yielded more fun episodes. Only the 1st season set of DVDs featured bonus material. Come on, those guys were everywhere in the 80's and I think more extras featuring the entire cast would have been a nice inclusion. Overall, I was sad to see the series end, but the way they ended made sense. As flawed as season five was, I did want some closure, having lived overseas during a good run of the show. I would love to see another movie done, this time picking up where Crockett and Tubbs are today, doing things old school in a 'PC' world, run by young punks who don't get them. I'm sure Both Johnson and Thomas would enjoy the work and fans would scream and applaud as the old Ferrari is taken out of mothballs with Crockett and Tubbs back on the case. As en vogue as the 80's are, seats would be filled. Mark HopkinsRead full review
"Miami Vice" is about 20 years old and yet it remains the definition of coolness. Don Johnson's role as Sonny Crockett is the central character figure in this series and in Season Five, the season's finale, we see a maturation process of a series that was highlighted by flashy cars, flashy clothes and flashy dialogue interspersed with music of the era. Though this is far from the best season of the five-season series, the show's characters are seen in a graduation of sorts. It is a classic TV series and, though dated at times, provides the viewer with an entertaining vehicle for hours.
Always loved the quality of Miami Vice which still shines through after all these years. Missed most of it when it was first run, too busy with RL. It is good to see it uncut finally and without commercial interruptions. Love the Testarossa! Some people don't like season 5, I do. I always like the darker stories. Not all are up to par with the first few seasons, but Vice at it's "worst" is still so much better than most TV of that era (and most TV period). I have my favorites out of each season. The 2006 movie of the same name really sucked, 2 thumbs down. It was confusing and had none of the character of the original. It was even a rip off of one of the original stories. Michael Mann should have left the original characters alone and made a completely different, updated version with new characters if he felt he really had to make a movie of Miami vice. What he ended up with should have been called Maimed Vice. I'll stick with my DVDs of all 5 seasons of the original.Read full review
