My current system had the already nice 10-core/20-thread Core I9-7900X for the last 5 years. I've been considering updating to a recent AMD 16-core CPU but then I found this seller's brand-new-in-box 16-core/32-thread Core I9-7960X which is a drop-in replacement for my current 7900x. After studying the costs/benefits of both possibilities, I decided having to upgrade the motherboard for AMD as well as having to move to DDR5 RAM just to get 16 cores was almost a whole new system. I instead purchased this 7960X for a low-cost and easy drop-in upgrade-- no other part changes. The part was brand-new-in-box and exactly as described by the seller. The newly installed CPU booted up perfectly. I've been running it for 12-hours a day for about a week now using all 16 cores for giant open-source software builds such as LLVM with great improvements in build times. This part actually has been running cooler than the 7900X at full throttle-- though that might be due to using the newer Arctic MX-6 thermal compound. Very satisfied buyer overall. Bottom line-- if you already have a 7900x (10-core) or 7920x (12-core), this is a low-cost way to add 6C/12T with no other hardware changes for a life-extending upgrade. Once the newer mass-market CPUs move to 32 performance cores, that might be the right time to upgrade the actual CPU.Read full review
