The second in an apparently season-titled group of double rereleases, this pair of albums[previously released but very difficult to find]is quite literally a showcase of Jackie Leven's main talents. As a storyteller par excellence, and as a great songwriter and performer on Man bleeds in Glasgow, and as a superb interpreter of classic songs on Greetings from Milford. Now,to be fair, all of Jackie's live recordings-and there are many-are worthy at the least;but Man Bleeds in Glasgow is an epic. The songs are fantastic-some of his finest, married with some of the best performances of them. From the opening Farm Boy-hard and sharp-through the wonderfully preluded Burning the box of Beautiful things,to the Magisterial Snow in Central Park and on to the finale[What A Finale] Call mother a lonely field-Every song is a recrafted masterpiece. Add to that the storytelling between songs, and you have a near perfect Live album. So good that if Greetings from Milford was rubbish,it would still be a worthy purchase. And rubbish Greetings is most certainly not. Again, the opening track[she belongs to me]is a fair taste of the Uniformly high quality of this set. Other highlights include a tremendous Palr Blue Eyes, and for me the albums beating heart-a Bewitching Listening to Crows Pray. The recording quality of both discs is outstanding, sharp and rich, and the production superb. So,if you are new to Jackie and wish to sample his genius, get this album. And if you are one of the already converted- GET THIS ALBUM!!!Read full review
Must admit that I had never heard of Jackie Leven or his 1970's rock group Doll By Doll until I read an obituary in the Scottish press. I searched the big nationals and found that they were equally enthusiastic about his music. I bought this album and Doll By Doll's "Gypsy Blood" and found myself in a world of superlatives. Lyrics - 5 star, musical arrangements -5 star, production perhaps not so good, probably done on a shoestring budget. Jackie Leven should have been a musical icon in his lifetime instead of being a hidden gem. Cannot praise highly enough. Take a listen and be impressed.
Great live album but the great, departed folk maverick, Jackie Leven
