Fannie Flag is one of my favorite writers and in this book she spans the decades with a small rural town and brings her characters to light with humor and compassion and you feel like one of the neighbors too. This is feel good reading without being sappy.

Fannie Flagg is the supreme author of small-town America. She is able to accurately capture the very essence of what life was like in the 50's, and carry it through to modern times. Her characters are vibrant and real, and I became very attached to each of them - I didn't want the story to end! I laughed myself silly all the way through, and also shed an occasional tear. After reading this book, I would definitely read anything by Fannie Flagg.
This book is so entertaining that you can't put it down! It takes us back to an earlier time when life was less complicated and people more loving. Children were allowed to be children. It was so descriptive that you could actually picture yourself sitting down in the living room tuning in to Neighbor Dorothy. Even though the novel is very long..you never wanted it to end. That says alot! Bravo to Fannie Flagg for her super real characters that you grow to love. It would make the ultimate movie! All of Fannie's books should be made into movies. We need more "feel good" books and movies! I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone.
Maybe it is because of my age (70's) and from a small town but I love this book. It is a trip down memory lane in the best way.

Really good book, in her Elmwood Springs series of books. I feel like all the characters in that series are family .

I love Fannie Flagg's writing style. The characters come alive in her novels. I feel as if I have met new friends. Her story is entertaining and easy to follow and even though the book is long, I couldn't wait to pick it up to read some more! I first read this book by listening to it on tape. I enjoyed it so much, I listened to it a second time. I bought the book in order to have for the next time it is my turn to pick the book for my book club. What did I dislike about the book? The end. I didn't want it to end, I just wanted the story and characters to go on.
As I said in my review of Can't Wait To Get To Heaven, these books are terrific. Characters you would love to meet ( I would like to go to Normas for lunch even if she would get me all jumpy about having to go home and iron my own napkins), hilarity everwhere and a heartwarming story. Really reccommend all the books. How could you stand not to know what happens when Elner Shimfissle falls out of her tree and meets God?
This is really a sweet little book about a variety of quirky folks, those values we Americans cherish, or think we do, and a somewhat lost small-town Americana. It reveals the goodness and charity in seemingly odd, weird neighbors, and speaks to the goodness in all of us. Fannie Flagg's characters are quirky, funny and, always, delicious. A definite fun read for everyone.
If you enjoy going back in time to the 50's, and the typical life in small town America, you'll really like this book. It's warm, sweet, and the characters are well defined and likeable.
