"~My love for you is twinged with hate. ~And mine only with love. ~My love for you is twisted and neverending. ~And mine constant as a flame." A moving quote from the main lovers in this intriguing and emotionally twisting lovestory. These lovers are played by real-life married couple John Turturro and Katherine Borowitz. The movie also features their children and John's cousin, Aida Turrturro. Based on a play by Brandon Cole, who also wrote the screenplay. The story takes place in Victorian New York City and focuses on a troupe of actors who live and love and truely wring the most out of life. This is not your typical romantic movie. No "chick-flick" here!
This is a favorite film for me and I am surprised that it did not receive higher critical acclaim. The story is not that of an individual but one of a company of actors. The life and attitudes of thespians is unique and interesting. I think that the film is perhaps a little too loosely told for some people. It is said that Americans want a story with no ambiguity; perhaps this is its flaw. I am drawn to the more loosely told, artistic, and period films. It is interesting how the film resists being connected in space and time. I think the more important things in life are ideas and attitudes, not the functional aspects of life with which most films are told. Summarizing, I think Illuminata is a grand and entertaining work of art!
I am looking for opportunities to see films that may not appeal to the masses, therefore are not likely to be profitable. I have liked John Turturro since "Mr. Deeds". Illuninata has a wonderful cast: Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Ben Gazzara, Beverly D'Angelo and others. The plot gets a little hazy but overall if you want something other than what Hollywood has to offer here it is.
Perfect condition. GREAT experience, wonderful movie that has far too little publicity. If you love theatre, you will love this movie.
i liked this movie because it is a little off-kilter in its humor. It's not the great movie of the century but enjoyable. I tried it because I'm fond of Rufus Sewell. I Like most of his stuff.
