Chefinspektor Hagenberg vom Landeskriminalamt wird an den Ort eines bedenklichen Leichenfundes im Stadtgebiet von Hainburg beordert. Schatzgraber haben ein Skelett aus der Voelkerwanderungszeit freigelegt, aber einer von ihnen ist mit eingeschlagenem Schadel zuruckgeblieben. Was Hagenberg zunachst fur eine simple Auseinandersetzung im Raubgrabermilieu halt, entpuppt sich als historisches Ratsel, das auf die Spur einer verschollenen Delegation des Burgunderkoenigs Gundahar fuhrt, die im Jahre 436 n. Chr. versucht hat, den Hof des Hunnenkoenigs Attila zu erreichen. Hagenberg gerat bei seinen Ermittlungen in das Visier einer international agierenden Bande, die sich auf Kunstdiebstahl spezialisiert hat und vor keinem Mittel zuruckschreckt; auch nicht vor Mord. Beunruhigenderweise ist diese Bande uber jeden seiner Schritte informiert und vermutet offenbar, dass Hagenberg auf Informationen gestossen ist, die einen konkreten Hinweis auf den Verbleib des sagenhaften Nibelungenschatzes geben koennten. Ploetzlich ist Hagenberg selbst vom Jager zum Gejagten geworden.
