About this product

Product Information

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A landmark volume in science writing by one of the great minds of our time, Stephen Hawking's book explores such profound questions as: How did the universe begin--and what made its start possible? Does time always flow forward? Is the universe unending--or are there boundaries? Are there other dimensions in space? What will happen when it all ends? Told in language we all can understand, A Brief History of Time plunges into the exotic realms of black holes and quarks, of antimatter and "arrows of time," of the big bang and a bigger God--where the possibilities are wondrous and unexpected. With exciting images and profound imagination, Stephen Hawking brings us closer to the ultimate secrets at the very heart of creation.

"[Hawking] can explain the complexities of cosmological physics with an engaging combination of clarity and wit. . . . His is a brain of extraordinary power."-- The New York Review of Books "This book marries a child's wonder to a genius's intellect. We journey into Hawking's universe while marvelling at his mind."-- The Sunday Times (London)   "Masterful."-- The Wall Street Journal "Charming and lucid . . . [A book of] sunny brilliance."-- The New Yorker "Lively and provocative . . . Mr. Hawking clearly possesses a natural teacher's gifts--easy, good-natured humor and an ability to illustrate highly complex propositions with analogies plucked from daily life."-- The New York Times "Even as he sits helpless in his wheelchair, his mind seems to soar ever more brilliantly across the vastness of space and time to unlock the secrets of the universe."-- Time, "[Hawking] can explain the complexities of cosmological physics with an engaging combination of clarity and wit. . . . A brief history of time

Very difficult reading, not because of the writing but because of the subject. But if you are interested and have the time and energy, it is as good a book on the subject as you will find. Frankly the subject matter is beyond the average person, including this reader, but I did grasp some of the concepts presented. I will read it again to see if I can understand more of it, but one needs some background in the matter to be able to understand some of the concepts and theories presented. It is as well written and concise and clear as it can be made, I think. Try Einstein's little book that he wrote too explain, I believe, the special theory of relativity for comparison. Don't remember the name but you can find it if you're interested. And it is almost incomprehensible.

  • The universe in the palm of your hand--short & sweet

I've liked stars, planets, galaxies, etc, for years, but struggled with the hard-core math & physics involved. To my surprise (and relief!), Hawking not only knows the micros (subatomic particles) and the macros (possible/most likely outcomes of Big Bang) on the subject, but explains huge concepts in a fun (yes, he's actually got quite a keen sense of humor) and fairly easy and fascinating writing style. This is no college professor's self-indulgent lecture, but an amazing, concise, and enjoyable overview of where we've been (Newton & the apple), where we know now (quarks, supernovas, extrasolar planets), and insights into where we're headed (space, the Final Frontier). Depending on how deeply you dig into the meat of it, the book can take you anywhere from a week to a month to read, ...

  • Science and the cosmos.

This is an excellent book for scientists, and those that understand the complexity of the world. The technical aspects are beyond me, however I did enjoy most of the book. It was well worth the investment.
