First off, I am a middle aged gamer. I look for PC games with twisting storylines and character development. Portal did not meet either of these requirements. In fact, the "story" and main "character" left me with more questions than answers. Mind you, I did not play the game with the assistance of developer commentary (a main scren option). I think Valve answers some questions there. I wanted to, however, experience the game with no knowledge of what was to come. Although I did read three reviews of the game. I was pleasantly suprized with the fact that the game lets the player choose their own pace. You are not rushed in to making choices (unless you charge bull-headed in to a room full of turrets). Rather, you are left with time to figure out how to get through each level. It's sort of like working on a mechanical piece...figuring out how to put it back together or how find the exact part that's faulty. This is not a game for mindless shooters. This game focuses on thought an reflection, with each level becoming increasingly more difficult, yet based on conclusions made from prior levels. The graphics are great. I've got 1 gig of memory, a P4 and a Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro. More than enough for this game and the complete Half Life series. If you've played Half Life 2 and episode one you'll have no problems. You cannot, however, play this game while online with a firewall..especially Zone Alarm. It will interfere to the point of freezing. Since you have to play it through Steam, you'll have to go on line, connect to Steam, close your internet connection and your firewall, then play. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Portal. I do, however, have a mechanical, analytical and critical way of thought. Those merely seeking a fun and thoughtless venture will find Portal a dismal failure. it is a very intersting game, and I am curious to see how the portal gun and the short story fit in to the Half Life series as a whole. I hope you enjoy it. I did.Read full review
I was always curious about "Portal" game in the Orange Box. Portal had received a lot of recognition from critics and game reviewers. I started "Portal" expecting greatness... I have to say that the game delivered completely, and actually exceeded my expectations. As amazing as Portal it is, it is also short. I was able to beat the whole game in about 4 hours. But it was some of the most enjoyable 4 hours I ever spent playing a video game. The concept is simple you get 1 cool gun called 'the portal gun'. It is able to shot 2 portals. These two portals will instantly be connected to each other. So if you shoot a portal at the ceiling and another portal right at your feet you'll end up falling into a portal and seemingly come out of the ceiling and fall again into the floor in an endless loop. As you'll fall you will actually continue to accelerate because things such as speed and momentum of your character are conserved as you enter the portal. The game is brilliantly written and witty. You get a seemingly omnipresent robotic voice promising you cake if you comply and proceed through the different tests. Later in the game it becomes apparent that the whole 'cake thing' is a lie and that the computer is insane. There are tiny robots in the game with machine guns. They try to fatally shot you, and than they'd innocently ask you, "are you still there?" If you manage to knock one over they sometimes say in a cute voice, "I don't hate you." They say other witty things as well. "Portal" is a brilliant and very innovative game. I was stuck on some of the later puzzles for a bit, but overall the game offered a super satisfying and unique gaming experience. If you play PORTAL you may never look the same way about cake again, but maybe thats a good thing.Read full review
What is there to say about Portal? Plenty, and yet so little. Overall this is wonderful game, beautiful in it's design and original in it's gameplay. Filled with humor, suspense and interesting puzzles, this game is a must buy. It's only downside? It's length. It's not a horribly long game, as it's story mode can be completed in one or two sittings. Even including the bonus maps (edited levels built to be more challenging), it's still not that long. Regardless, it's humor and originality make up for it's length, as I can still sit down and enjoy running through the game even though I've beaten it many times. The comments and quips made by GLaDOS alone make it enjoyable. I definitely recommend this game to anyone and everyone, and urge you to buy your own copy the first chance you get.
This is one game that has both a great sense of humor and some really bizarre puzzles. The humor is not the sort that makes you laugh out loud, but chuckle inside and smile all day, and scratch your head trying to think in a way your brain never really was meant to. It is also the tamest first person game that i have ever played, suitable for probably any age and person that is able to puzzle through it. Great fun!
Portal is an intellectually challenging, sometimes funny game, with an edgy sense of humor. It requires a computer with good gaming capabilities, such as an effective video card that supports Pixel Shading 1.1 or better, in order to play; and fairly robust memory. I would recommend it for someone with gaming experience who wants a challenging, unique set of problems to solve in a futuristic, high tech setting.
This is one of the best games I have ever played.

Portal is one of the most innovative and fun games in recent years, a tad short though but still quite enjoyable. Really a must-have game.
