Reviews
"Having this book in my hands, I felt a joy at the thought that strong personalities like that of Gombrowicz, sooner or later find recognition thanks to the sheer intensity of their existence." --Czeslaw Milosz, New York Review of Books, "The  Diary is truly a work of magisterial proportions--in scale, depth, range, intimacy, originality, provocativeness. . . . Indeed there are some for whom the  Diary stands even higher than Gombrowicz's own fiction." --Louis Iribarne, "The Diary is truly a work of magisterial proportions--in scale, depth, range, intimacy, originality, provocativeness. . . . Indeed there are some for whom the Diary stands even higher than Gombrowicz's own fiction." --Louis Iribarne, "I am absolutely sure that this translation will be considered a great event in American intellectual life." --Stanislaw Baranczak

Synopsis
This is the first English translation of Witold Gombrowicz's Diary, the most Polish and the most universal of his works. Gombrowicz (1904-1969), who left Poland at age thirty-five and never returned, whose writings were banned in his own country, has had an impact on Polish literature unlike any of his contemporaries. But he changed more than the image of Polish letters. If literature cannot influence national character, it can at least influence the national image, its understanding and evaluation of itself. That is what Gombrowicz changed: the image and stereotype of the Pole., This is the first English translation of Witold Gombrowicz's Diary, the most Polish and the most universal of his works.

  • A day in the Life of Witold Gombrowicz-the best writer you never heard of

Witold Gombrowiz was an esteemed Polish writer in exile who went to Argentina in 1939 to escape the Nazi's. His novel, Ferdyduke, made a literary splashin Poland before the war and so he was somewhat known when he landed in South America. For many years he lived in lonliness, poverty but slowly he began to refind his voice. He was miserable but he was alive. He remained in Argentina for 24 years. In 1953 he began to write for a Polish exile newspaper to make enough money to surive and and many of these Diary entries, were part of those submissions. But none of this tells you who Gomborwicz was or what a great writer he is. No matter who you are and what you think you know, Gombrowicz will still blow your mind because there is no one like him. He is deep, self-absorbed, and sometimes ...
