My son needed a good watch to keep on on time and on task. So far, it has been a very big hit. So much so, that he wears it to bed at night. Like my own everyday Seiko 5, it has been trouble free and keeps very good time (for a mechanical watch). Easy to see and read, cool glass-back so you can see that gorgeous mechanism. These are without a doubt, the very best mechanical (self-winding) watches you can get for the money. You can spend big buck for Omegas (I have a Speedmaster) and Rolex mechanicals to impress, but you wont get a better timepiece. That is the primary reason military folks and survivalist like them. When all the batteries are gone, theses will still be keeping good time.

I'm sadly disappointed with my first Seiko after all the praise I have read leading up to my purchase. My timepiece does not keep proper time. Isn't that the very LEAST you expect from a name brand wristwatch? I have a friend who buys cheap Chinese clone watches that keep better time. I wanted the real thing, a proper watch to do the simplest of all possible tasks: tell me what time it is accurate and dependable. This model isn't it.

My first Seiko was purchase in 1971, while I was stationed in San Diego. I finally had to give that one to the Jewelry guy, because it was not worth the expense to have to replace the crystal and clean it. Now I regret that. I halve fallen for the see thru back side. And I now have four of them. This one is so dressy. I usually try to stay away from non Arabic numeral ones , but this one was just to gorgeous to pass up. Of course with this mechanism you have to keep it wound with your wrist motion or have a watch winder. the one thing that gives this style an A+ is that I don't have to replace the battery. And with good care and some maintenance, it keeps excellent time. The iridescent hour markers and the minute and hour hands are not quite bright enough for me, but I can live with it. The folding watch clasp bracelet is okay for me, as I have grown to like the way it snaps on my wrist. With some I like it more because it doesn't grab my arm hairs like the expandable ones have done in the past, and if you happen to take a swing it might go flying off your hand. I have not ever had that problem with the snap on one. The stem that sets the time, day and date seems hard to set some times, especially if you don't have enough of a finger nail. So all in all I will approve all degrees of anyone wanting to buy this watch. Read full review

These are a good choice for a casual automatic watch. Note that you really need to wear it every day or so or it will run down and need resetting. Also, as with any automatic, it will not be as accurate as a simple quartz watch. They come in blue, black, green & khaki dials and have matching nylon straps as models SNKH69*. You can also get them with a metal bracelet but this is Seiko's folded link type & while adequate (and nicer than say most Casio bracelets), it is still a cheap bracelet. For your money, and I picked mine up for around the mid US$20 mark plus P&P althogh here in NZ they retail for NZ$275ish), you get a reliable auto (these Seiko 5s often go 20 years without a service) with day & date, second hand, good luminous features and an easy to read dial. Seiko make hundreds of dressier styles but this is a nice casual look. The nylon strap helps it be quite light which I prefer. If you want a heavy watch look elsewhere. The face is around 38mm across so this is not one of the currently fashionable large watches. It does have an exhibition back (see thru) so you can see the auto mechanism working away when you take it off. The crystal is Hardlex not sapphire so it will scratch if you knock it. The other downside is that they are only water resistant to 30m which is just splash proof. I have had no issues wearing mine in light rain but you might not want to tramp all day with it. If it matters to you these do come in versions which are made in Japan (written on the dial) and Asian assembled. I can't see any difference between the two but some people prefer the made in Japan ones and so you may pay more for these. I know some people wear a Seiko 5 as a "beater" - a watch to wear when you are doing rough work etc. However in my mind you would be better of with a more water resistant watch that wasn't an auto that will run down after 40 odd hours. A cheap Timex, G-shock or Eco-drive would be more my pick as a beater. To move up market from this in the Seiko range you can consider a Seiko 5 sports model, most of which are WR100 (although not all - there are WR50 & WR200 versions o check) but most of these are heavy watches on much classier metal bracelet. You could also consider a Seiko 5 superior which is a dressier watch & often comes with both a sapphire crystal and WR100. But probably your bestbet is the newly released Seiko 5 military model, the SNZG* models. These have a very similar look to this watch & come in the same range of colours but are WR100. At present though you will pay over US$100 for one on eBay so they are quite a bit pricier. But in summary the SNKHs are a nice introduction to a casual, inexpensive, automatic watch that should last you several decades. I still wear mine despite having a variety of other watches. Highly recommended.Read full review
The Seiko SNK80* series are a set of smallish military style watches available in four colors. I chose green. The watch is beautifully made, accurate, easy to read and has a very useful day/date complication. The caseback showing the running 7s26c movement is very lovely and the movement is beautiful. This is a perfect everyday automatic, particularly good as a first auto for a new watch collector. The seiko is robust, runs well, and comes on a very sturdy and comfortable strap. At this price, the only reason not to buy is that you already have one
