I'm a Pro Videographer - I picked up one of these for a song, just to have it. The image quality is pretty good for a single chip camera... but the mini-DVD format is sort of a mixed blessing... Pros: mini-DVD's are cheaper than tape now, if you know where to look these DVD' can be finalized and then played back right away in any DVD player - this is handy for impatient people to see what they shot right away, etc - and is also nice because it then becomes a format that you don't have to re-encode to create DVD's Cons: The Discs can scratch easily they only hold 30 minutes in SP mode (best compression, etc) not as easy to work with on any NLE for editing later risky finalizing step - if it fails, you have NOTHING, and the disc is then a coaster... doesn't happen often, but it can happen. bottom line - this format was another brain child of Sony, and the idea with it, was to be able to quickly play back and keep your DVD's archived as they are - it's a good choice for someone that can't be bothered with editing, and just wanted to have as shot footage saved as it is... There are better choices if you plan on using your computer to edit the footage later... but for the casual shooter, it's a good choice, if you are a careful sort of person that likes to carry lots of little 3 inch dvd's with you. All in all, if you like the dvd idea "right out of the camera" it's a good choice. Camera itself is nice - all menu touch screen controls - lots of nice features at this price point - pretty good in low light - again, nothing like a 3 chip camera, or the newer high end cmos chips in the canons, but good for what it is.Read full review
For a home user like me the DVD201 camcorder of Sony is ideal since it provides a very friendly menu, high standard resolution and compact size and weight. Ideal for home or outside shooting we have spent already hours of school activities and family gatherings. Brilliant ratio between prize and quality. It has some options that more recent models do not have (connectivity IN/OUT AV and S/Video that can be used as an external DVD burner for Hi8 old type camcorders). For a non techno freak it sure deserves the money spent. We love it!
I bought this camcorder to use for recording those special moments with my new grandbabies. Considering I have never used a camcorder before, this one was less challenging than I had anticipated. It was received in great condition, all accessories were included, it was fully functional. short of wishing I had a received a virtual "hands on lesson", I would highly recommend this product to not only the inexperienced but to anyone looking for a camcorder. Even though it is an older model and may not be as compact as some new camcorders, it does have excellent options for both still pictures and videos/movies. Short of wishing I had received a virtual "hands on lesson", as I found the instructional booklet to be less than reader friendly, I would highly recommend this product to not only the inexperienced but to anyone looking for a reliable camcorder.Read full review
I had the experience of see the footage and versatility of the identical camera purchased by my son 3 years back. After treking it to Iraq and back in the Military on two tours of duty, it was evident this video camera would do just about anything someone wanted to do. Having been both a semi-pro photographer most of my life as well as doing sports videography work with a Canon L2 (Hi8, high priced) video camera, I was extremely impressed by a camera that originally cost about 1/4th the cost of the L2 several years back. Now I have the DVD201 at 1/2 the price. From image stabilization, to extremely low light shooting, it's a breeze to use. Both light weight with no-nonsense menus makes it easy for anyone - even a first time user. Although I still use the viewfinder most of the time, others will find the small flip-out screen more to their liking. Regardless, for under $400, you can't match the camera feature for feature for newer ones costing more. The only other camera I would have considered in one of the newer HD units and for the time being, I can be happy with this unit at about 1/2 the cost of an HD unit with fewer features.Read full review
I purchased this item because I've always wanted a camcorder and Sony is supposed to be one of the best. I think it was one of the best decisions I ever made and I'm truly happy with it. I have a thing for gadgets and this is just another gadget that I had to have. It's fun to create memories and share them with others. Also, the price was perfect for me because I know that this type of camera usually starts at around $300 and I paid quite a lot less than that for a brand new one. There's nothing like getting a deal on a new item. The best thing about buying this item was the "buy it now" feature. I didn't have to bid against anyone and take the chance on losing the camera to someone else. I can't rate this against any other products because this is my first one but I do really like it.Read full review
