Drill 1/2" (31/64" For a tight fit - 1/2" is close enough) hole at the back of your plastic can, above the fill line and pop it in gently with a rubber mallet. We suggest you drill a smaller hole (1/8") to start with and then use the 1/2" or (31/64") drill bit. A decent product...unless...
...you have weak hands. The vent caps take some work to snap on, probably more than an elderly person or child would have. They also take a lot of effort to push into the 31/64" hole, but that should prevent it from leaking. A hammer didnt work for me (as suggested), but using a small block of wood to push it into the hole worked. I found that on newer Scepter gascans the only viable spot to drill is on the flat part under the handle, (the handle is too small and round, kind of like a large hotdog), but I would much rather have it where traditional vents were placed, before politicians took over the design of gascans. This is a decent product and allows you to pour gas almost as well as you could 10 years ago. Hopefully a better product comes out to allow a nice fit into a round ... ...you have weak hands.
