Pherber Jones, Paul Bayze, and David Quintanar were three undergrad kids living in the outskirts of the Pomona and Diamond Bar areas, who joined forces December 1991 in Pherber's garage. Savvy after playing tunes from Fugazi, The Cure, Joy Division, The Pixies, The Smiths, Teenage Fanclub, The Gorilla Biscuits, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, they began arranging originals. Pinhead's first gig was as early as 1992, at a little hole in the wall bar in Pomona called Munchies, a place many locals recall with fondness. Word spread about Pinhead. No one in Pomona or Diamond Bar had yet seen such energy from a trio fronted by a diminutive yet powerful woman playing aggressive guitar and vocals, while exhibiting incredible, high-strung stage presence, supported by David's straight-edge drumming and Paul's killer hooks on bass. People came in droves to see Pinhead at the Coffeehouse, Cup of J, and The Haven in Pomona. In 1993 they ventured out to Hollywood to play The Roxy, The Whiskey A Go-Go, The Coconut Teazer, The Chorus Club, The Tempest, Mr. T's Bowl, The Garage, Raji's, Club Lingerie, The Martini Lounge, and The Cat Club. In 1994, the band gained stage presence with the addition of Eric Ruelas as soulful lead guitarist. The combination of the quartet's talents brought about a newfound identity and respect among the local bands in the Pomona post modern punk scene. With enough money saved, they traveled north to play the California coastal cities of San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and then south to San Diego, all the while building audience strength and approval. The band had also performed live at the college radio station KUCI 88.9FM. Since inception, Pinhead have come out with several recordings. The demo "Out of Reach" featured songs like the popular "Despised," having a sinister punk groove. Another recording entitled "Scrape Away" featured songs including the melodic "Falling In." The "Drive" E.P. showed the band's progression with songs like guitar-driven "Dagger" and "Thirteenth." The next E.P. entitled "Contact High" had positive feedback with the inspiring "Ecstacy" and the guitar rock angst of "Resin" and "Straight-laced." Pinhead has matured and gained finesse with their music and Pherber's extraordinary vocal and lyrical prowess, of which she has been compared to Patti Smith and PJ Harvey. They thrive with a new E.P. release entitled "Surfing the Afterlife," featuring the single "Cabin Fever", that captures the band's essence with Pherber's harmonies supported by rock-driven guitar, bass, and drum. Also on the album are the dark melodic Motels-ish tune "Morphine", the bass-fuzz driven Queen's of the Stone Age-ish track of "All For Money," the more lively positive-feeling tune of "Life's A Gas," and a better-than-the-original rendition of The Damned's "Neat Neat Neat."
