About this product

Product Information

The first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that gave life to the Dead and inspired the HBO original series True Blood. Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana--except for her "disability." She can read minds. But she can't hear a word that Bill Compton is thinking when he walks into her life--and then one of her coworkers is killed... Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.

Praise for #1 New York Times  bestselling author Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels "It's the kind of book you look forward to reading before you go to bed, thinking you're only going to read one chapter, and then you end up reading seven."--Alan Ball, executive producer of True Blood "Vivid, subtle, and funny in her portrayal of southern life."-- Entertainment Weekly "Charlaine Harris has vividly imagined telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse and her small-town Louisiana milieu, where humans, vampires, shapeshifters, and other sentient critters live...Her mash-up of genres is delightful, taking elements from mysteries, horror stories, and romances."-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "The series continues to be inventive and funny with an engaging, smart, and sexy heroine."-- The Denver Post "Blending action, romance, and comedy, Harris has created a fully functioning world so very close to our own, except, of course, for the vamps and other supernatural creatures."-- The Toronto Star, "A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that's hard to put down, and should not be missed." — Susan Sizemore

Item was as described and packaged very well. Responsive seller when question was asked. Minimal delay in shipping due to weekend (bought on Sunday, shipped on Tuesday) but they communicated that well. Would buy from again.

Just received 13 Dune comics early and in perfect condition. Seller communicated with me often and packaged comics with care and professionalism. Shipping was in a comic mailer with bubble wrap for protection. The comics were exactly as described in auction and his follow-up emails. Seller was easy to work with and combined shipping. They even threw in an extra comic which I really appreciate! Fully recommend "SabertoothComics" for your future business. Thx again!

  • The MUST read for fans of HBOs' True Bood

I purchased this book upon seeing the first episode of HBOs' True Blood, which is taken from the Sookie Stackhouse book series. This first book in the series did not disappoint. It is an easy read, of around 300 pages. There is a real feel for the setting, and the characters, full of mystery, romance and humor. As a 'True Blood' viewer I prefer the on-screen character development of the 2 leads, but I feel this novel is essential for those watching this first season of the series, to see where the similarities and differences lie between both tales. I find myself going back to the novel, because it's fun to see where you think the story may be going, once characters do things differently than what is on the page. If you enjoy fantasy and romance, as well as vampires and mythology, you will ...

  • Recommended exciting & romantic novel

Although I'm not fond of mystery novels and vampire stories (this was my first), this was pretty good. Entertaining, exciting, funny and romatic at the same time. (What else would a girl need?) :) The plot was rather simple, - small town, mind-reader waitress Sookie falls for a newly "legalised" cool vampire "back in town", their love blossoms slowly, while nearly the whole town is against their relationship and mysterious murders scare the dwellers, but finally Sookie solves the mystery and they could live happily ever after... if Bill, the vampire wasn't already dead. :) So basically quite usual stuff: romance and murder, spiced with some unusual: vampires. However, I liked Harris's style anyway. Definitely I'm not going to be a Sookie Stackhouse fan, as Harris wrote a series of her ...

  • Different & Less Exciting than the Show--But still ok

The read itself was quick and easy. It is a very straight forward book but it does lack the action and suspense as the True Blood show. This is actually the first time I'd have to say that the show is better than the book. The book is completely different from the show. All of the outcomes are the same but they happen differently. There's less drama and some characters from the show are also missing from the book. It was almost like someone read the book and was like "Hey, I can do better" and made the series out of it. It brought back some of the show imagery but the only reason to read this book is if you're interested in how different the story line really is from the show. A pleasant and simple book to read though.

  • Murder and Vampires and Lust--Oh, My!

A fun read--Sookie Stackhouse, our protagonist, is a quirky, funny waitress in a bar in Louisiana. She is also telepathic--a gift that she calls her 'disability'. She is also in love with Bill--a Vampire. There are murders, family issues, a might-be-Elivis Vampire, love and loss in this book. While this book isn't one of the best I've ever read, I'm going to read the other Sookie Stackhouse books, 'cuz I just really like that Vampire-lovin' girl.

  • Fast & Fun!

I began this series with the promise of a "Twilight for adults", and was not disappointed! I have not (and most likely never will) watched the True Blood HBO series. This book is fast-paced and fun, making it a hard one to put down. I read 169 pages in my first sitting, and had the entire novel finished within 24 hours of starting! The book is somewhat short, but this was a smart marketing technique on part of the author- I'm sure that anyone who reads it (like myself) will be rushing out to buy the next one in the series!
