Works well. Updating to the latest firmware from Teac site was easy but check that your serial numbers leading digits must be 196 or 198 first.

    Good unit from Smartselections.

I bought a unit through Smartselections on e-bay and I had no trouble setting up and connecting to my TV. The unit has many functions which are easy to find and operate using the good sized remote (supplied). Channel finding and recording and play back were easy to operate. For the price and what I received I am happy with my purchase. Smartselection were very helpful and one of the best traders I have dealt with. They provided a speedy delivery and threw in a HDMI cable as an extra. This is the first time I've dealt with Smartselections and I have put them in my favorites list.

  • Top critical review

    Could've been better.

I had this same model a while ago & this new box hasn't improved. It has annoying functions. Although it says you can delete the channel list but you cannot. You are left with channels you don't need or want to use. It stars playing recorded programs on your list when you just want to view them. The information display on the bottom of the screen keeps disappearing. it doesn't keep the marker of when you want to resume playing a recording on some recordings & you have to stat playing from the beginning even though it's supposed to be another feature. For the remaining Set Top box selection available in Australia today in this price range I guess it's the best of a bad bunch.

  • Better than nothing but dont expect too much.

This PVR is a very basic and under powered device so dont expect much for your $40. Ive used it for about a month so far instead of foxtel. It often records the wrong channel and there are many handy fuctions it wont do. It doesnt like time time shifting on a HD channel and will freeze on playback and you have to exit that mode and loose what you time shifted. You cannot playback a show you are recording (or pause) and must wait until it's finished. The menu and EPG are slow and clunky, usable but not well designed. The good: It's ok if you want to time shift a standard definition channel. The picture is ok. It doesnt get hot and will sleep after a period you can set up. Better than nothing. Its a shame TEAC dont put in a bit more effort, charge a little more and make it great.

  • Not for me

My brother and I bought one of these each to replace the cheap EOL Wintal boxes we had (which when they were working were great). Both units randomly switch to standby. I contacted TEAC because initially I though it was some sort of green intentional feature, they said 'they have no such feature' so I gather they are both faulty. The one I got locks up randomly with a blue screen and has to be power cycled to make it work again. My brothers has done that once, mine does it nearly every day. So we would normally go down the warranty Rabbit hole, but these units have other things we don't like. It is not possible to leave the unit sitting in a media player menu for more than a few seconds. That results in the unit automatically exiting back to TV mode. It has USB1 & USB2 in the media ...

  • Fairly poor, but a few good features

Frequently the STB enters a "dead" state where only half a screen is displayed. When this happens, the remote does nothing, even though the green light on the STB box flashes, indicating reception of the remote signal. When in this state, the ON/OFF button does nothing either. The unit has to be switched off at the mains and then turned back on to reboot. When this is done, the STB "forgets" to display the subtitles (subtitles have to be switched back on) and the "INFO" display has to be turned back on. Have tried reloading the manufacturers defaults, but the problem still exists Not sure whether this is a firmware problem or a faulty unit. Have not had any success contacting TEAC. The unit also gets very hot. Good points:- Good EPG Easy recording scheduling Small size
