This is the original black & white production that I watched with my mother when I was a little girl almost sixty years ago. As I watched the movie I marveled at the friendship between Joe and his leading lady played by Terry More. Even with todays computers and special effect artists I don't believe that the creation of Joe could have been better! This is good clean entertainment that the entire family can enjoy with not even a hint of foul diirty language, corny or hokey. It has a great story line, heros to root for and a love interest this is it! I still love all of the old ones and wish that they were more readily available.

This movie came out in 1949, and was a HUGE hit, as well as an Award Winner! As a child, the King Kong movies scared me and were sad, which I didn't like. This movie used to play repeatedly on TV on certain weekends, on A NY Channel 9 show called "Million Dollar Movie". My sisters would complain that I was hogging the TV for the whole day, watching it over and over again. This would be the only time my mother would be overindulgent, especially where TV was concerned, as this movie would keep me mesmerized (and out of trouble) for hours on end. I was obsessed with Joe, and would imagine myself to be the little girl in the movie, who made the baby Joe her best friend. This movie was and still is "magical". I'm in my 50's now, and it is still my all time favorite movie. A few years back, Disney remade it. It was "okay", but hardly any comparison to the original. It didn't even seem like the same idea, as they changed every single thing about it, including the story line. The one little "extra" I appreciated in the remake was that the actress who had played Joe's best girl in the original, had a small cameo role. The other thing was that Disney produced "Mighty Joe Young" toys to coincide with their remake, which I promptly went out and purchased. But getting back to the subject of the original movie, it was very special. It had everything. It had sweetness and comedy, excitement and drama, heartbreak and sadness, but a wonderful ending. It's has a great story line, and although the special effects are obviously old fashioned and out of date, they somehow still "work". I love this movie, and any other old movie buff who somehow missed this one, will discover a classic masterpiece upon viewing it. For those of us who have always loved "Joe", we can never see it too many times.Read full review
Another great film. Good special effects for its time. Filmed in black and white. Special effects by Harry Harryhausen .Good story line, Robert Armstrong wants to go to Africa to make a movie about wild animals for his nightclub. And captures some for his nightclub. And finds Mighty Joe Young. And brings him an his owner to New York. Starts out good but in time go bad Joe has enough and goes wild destroying everything thing . The people try to capture him but he gets away. Finally on there way out of the city they find a building on fire with small children in it. Joe saves them and for this act is sent home to Africa. A happy ending. Another great film in black and white.

It is a great story with a lot more heart and sentimentality than King Kong. Actors are top quality so it's not a B type horror movie, more like a family type fantasy. And you get to see legendary cowboy actor Ben Johnson in his prime as a very young man!
