First time Belgian director Le Moine weaves a grotesque, allegorical tale around the diminutive Lucien Lhotte (Thual), a dwarf who writes fraudulent love letters for an unscrupulous law firm to use as false evidence in divorce cases. When he is called upon to draft some scurrilous prose for the firm's largest (in both senses of the word) client--the fading opera diva Countess Paola Bendoni (Ekberg)--he stages a daring seduction that lands him in the arms and bed of the ample singer. However, to Lucien's dismay, their love is fleeting. When the Countess takes back her philandering husband, Lucien descends into a downward spiral of rage, despair and depraved vengeance. But as his inner demons overtake him, a blossoming friendship with a naive young trapeze artist (Peyrelon) offers possible salvation.

An excellent and touching black and white artsy film.
Originally bought to see the older overweight former beauty queen Anita Ekberg, in this unusually touching film. Very artsy in nature yet full of emotion and passion. The story centers around a dwarf/midget attorney who is capable at his job, despite his being a social misfit. He is a lonely soul, who attracts the attention of a 12-15 year old girl whose father has a successful circus act. They strike up a loving friendship (non sexual) which saves him financially and emotionally after he is fired from his job. The dwarf's performance at his job failed because of his obsession with, and subsequent rejection by the wealthy widow Contessa, played by Anita Ekberg. In a rage he murders the Contessa, but manages to escape apprehension, because suspicion led to another lover who he knew and ...
