I picked up Sansom's novel, Dissolution, the first in the series, in a charity shop because I was intrigued at his courage in writing a historical murder mystery set in the era of the dissolution of the monasteries, a subject that I had never known fiction to approach before. It was terrific. It brought to life an era of chaos and universal danger in England, and the struggle that decent people, whether Protestant or Catholic, suffered through in trying to live decent lives, treading a political and social minefield in the shadow of the Tower, the gibbet and the rack. I bought the rest of the series on eBay and Dark Fire and Sovereign were equally hard to put down.
The Shardlake series of novels are very well researched Tudor-era historical fare!
