Back when everyone was alive we'd sing around the piano: my father, Mrs. Barry, McGurty-cousins and neighbors standing three rows deep. Someone to turn the page, to bring a drink for the piano player, Mrs. Barry, and later, me, when we were all still alive. I keep a picture on my piano, all of us singing Christmas carols, mouths open and eyes lit up with red and green lights, that big old gold mirror in the front room reflecting all of us back to ourselves when we were all still alive, singing. I glance at it late at night when I play for all of us then, "My Funny Valentine" and "Dancing In The Darl," beyond the single lamp, voices rushing back to fill the silence between notes.
