About this product

Product Information

The English Roses is a story of rivalry and friendship among schoolgirls in contemporary London. Four little girlsNicole, Amy, Charlotte, and Graceare eleven years old and the very best of friends. They have sleepovers, picnics and ice-skating parties that exclude Binah, a beautiful girl whose seemingly perfect life makes them "green with envy." However, when a feisty, pumpernickel-loving fairy godmother takes them on a magical journey, they learn to their great surprise that Binah's life is not nearly as enviable as it had seemed. The English Roses is an inspiring story about the importance of compassion and the rewards of friendship."

Reviews
"The story explores several issues, among them the idea that one can be envied or pitied and the emotional deprivation that often motivates overcompensation in both children and adults...Forget Madonna's wild ways. She offers a vital message for girls. Judge the book, not the author."--Deirdre Donahue, USA Today

  • Madonna, NOT a good role model, but her book is great !

I came across Madonna’s book, The English Roses, by accident. She has a girls clothing line through boutique brand Lipstik. Anna has quite a few English Roses outfits and LOVES them! I decided to bid on an auction that included an English Roses umbrella (by kidadorable, I believe) and Madonna's book, The English Roses. When they arrived, I let Anna have the umbrella right away...the book, however, sat on my nightstand until I found time to read it...checking it for questionable content. You have to understand, this is Madonna we are talking about! I really couldn't imagine anything she wrote being appropriate for my almost 6-year-old daughter. I realize she is a mother, like me, but I’m pretty sure, other than that fact, we have very little else in common! The book very pleasantly ...

  • Excellent Book for Relating Jealousy and Popularity Iss

Madonna address popularity and jealousy issues delicately yet head on from an interesting perspective. Retorical questions involve the reader allowing you to stop the story and answer the questions, as well as stop on your own and ask questions too. This technique is used in advanced reading seminars to help children comprehend what they are reading. It allows them to think about what they are reading rather than glancing over the words. Adorable illustrations compliment the story, which is sweet but not too cotton candyish. The story will help kids dealing with cliques that won't let them in and also reaches the popular kids who won't let others into their group. Additionally, I find it fascinating because Madonna lost her mother when she was young and had to deal with adult situations ...

  • Way to go Madonna

I bought this book for a gift, but I read it before I placed it in the giftbox. I love the pictures but even better the story. I felt that this book is a great addition to any children library. The pictures are really beautiful and the message is one in which every child can relate to. I couldn't believe that such a great book was written by the "material girl". Way to go Madonna, and I can not wait to read the next books in her series.

  • The English Roses - A Wonderful Book!!!

This is such a wonderful book! It has a great story line and beautiful illustrations! I think the story itself is best suited for girls age 8 and up, but my toddler loved the pictures! I looked around for this book and finally found it on Ebay for an awesome price! A great addition to any child's book collection!

  • The English Roses by Madonna (2003) Excellent story,

I came across this book on ebay and I remembered watching Oprah and she was interviewing Madonna about her new talent in writing stories for young girls. When I saw this book I remembered and I was very interested in having it for my daughter to read. It is a lovely story and it a very positive book and in its own way it helps with a young girls self esteem. I would recommend this book.
