About this product

Product Information

The classic silent film which made Rudolph Valentino into a faint-inducing international sex symbol, THE SHEIK concerns the romantic adventures of Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan who, bewitched by the beauty of British aristocrat Lady Diana, keeps her locked away in a love nest hoping to make her his concubine. In the sequel, SON OF THE SHEIK, Valentino (playing Young Ahmed) falls madly in love with the dancing girl Yasmin. This special edition culminates with original newsreel footage of Valentino's massively attended funeral. The star, at age 31, died just 8 days after collapsing at the premiere of the latter film.

  • Star of the silent cinema

It takes some discipline for a modern audience to watch and actually enjoy silent movies. Rudolf Valentino was the first "sex star," or more correctly sexy star of the silent era. In The Sheik, it is easy to see why audiences were so drawn to him. He is simply magnetic, especially in the dance scenes. No one can do the tango like Valentino, as his co-star simply melts into his body. Even by today's standards, he is compelling the way he commands the stage. It is no wonder he was such an attraction during his heyday, which unfortunately was cut short due, first to contract disputes, and then to a fatal illness. In the sequel, Son of Sheik, he is still charismatic, but the story is weaker, and he plays both the father and the son and neither is quite as interesting as his character in the original feature. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was his other major hit, and though this is a package set and worth watching, Sheik and Horsemen together give a better idea of his appeal.
