The ancient Ethiopian capital in Tigray is one of Africa's most spectacular archaeological sites. Its importance is recognized by UNESCO, which has declared it a World Heritage Site. In 1906 the Deutsche Aksum expedition made a thorough and detailed record of the city's ancient momuments. The report, published in German in 1913, is now very rare. This annotated translation aims to make the expedition's work more widely known, and is brought up to date by a chapter on more recent discoveries.
