I am a fairly recent convert to the PT fanclub & until I got this CD, most of what I'd heard was their newer output. So I wanted to hear something from "the early days" & this was it. Another purchaser should be aware that this reissue contains a newly recorded drum track by PT drummer Gavin Harrison. In his liner notes, Steven Wilson notes that he was always dissatisfied w/the programmed drums he used on the original release; thus the re-recording. So, if you're a purist, you may want the original single disc release. In true Wilson fashion, however, I find that the new drumming fits in without being noticeable, & if you want to hear how "Up the Downstair" originally sounded, there is the inclusion on the 2nd disc of the EP "Staircase Infinities" which is untouched except for remastering. As to the music, there is so much going on that I haven't really gotten familiar enough to choose particular cuts. Wilson was using the power chords that continue on newer releases like "In Absentia" & "Deadwing", but there is less of a "metal" sound found here. Many of his guitar interludes are simply beautiful &, like I said, there are so many swirling keyboards & secondary guitars, it's impossible to take it all in in a few listens. But that's part of why I love this type of music: there seem to be new things to discover w/each listen. Highly recommended.Read full review
