About this product

Product Information

One of our all time best selling books is now in its second edition with three additional chapters, color photos and descriptive captions. Turid Rugaas is a noted expert on canine body language, notably "calming signals" which are signals dogs give to other dogs and humans to denote stress and to attempt defuse situations that otherwise might result in fights or aggression. Written in practical, down-to-earth, logical language. Companion DVD, 'Calming Signals: What Your Dog Tells You', DTB788, is also available.

Excellent for all who work with dogs.

This book is a must have for anyone that works with/boards dogs. It is short, specific about how dogs communicate. You can understand their language more by reading this book. This is not specifically about "body language", but a deeper understanding of how dogs communicate themselves & their intentions to other dogs. By honing your observation skills, you can see these communications yourself. There are also excellent photos in the book that demonstrate these behaviors. Great book, wonderful price. I gave it as a gift to a dog sitter.

  • On Talking Terms With Dogs by Turid Rugaas

For anyone interested in improving their understanding of their dog and how to deal with their stress this is a really good book. It will not teach you how to train them but working with other resources and the information gained in this book will make you a better trainer. It has already in a short time allowed me to begin to reduce the reactiveness of dogs that we pass daily on our walks. Dogs that previously barked and threw themselves at the fence when we walked past now hardly react at all when I approach with my two dogs. All simply from body language and using the calming signals from the book. In combination with the Turid Rugaas video Calming Signals it is a very usefull book.

  • A dog behavior classic

Turid Rugaas is a Scandinavian trainer and behaviorist with an amazing ability to truly observe canines and learn how to interact with them in ways that the dogs innately understand. "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals" has become a classic in the world of positive reinforcement dog training, and is a book every dog owner should have on the shelf. Be sure, however, that it doesn't stay on the shelf, for the information in this book will make you a better dog owner, and make your dog a happier pet. Rugaas goes over the basics behind how dogs communicate calming signals to one another, and then not only takes you through many of these signals, but gives examples of how we humans can use canine body language to our own advantage in communicating to our dogs. It's said that every ...

  • Huge disappointment.

Mostly a collection of pictures and anecdotes about dog behaviors that MIGHT be calming signals but also MIGHT be several other things. Just one example: Rugaas concludes that when a dog turns its head that is a sign that the dog is uncomfortable, which MIGHT be true. But it also MIGHT be the dog responding to an unusual sound or it MIGHT be seeing a distant moving object, etc. etc. Rugaas typically focuses in on only one interpretation of common dog behaviors like licking the nose, turning away, sniffing, yawning, tail waging, etc. all of which have multiple interpretations. More of a pamphlet than a book--only 75 small pages and many of them have only abbreviated text. No index.

  • Great so far...

So far I like this book, it's easy to read and I like the notion of talking to my dogs or understanding what my dogs say to me. I got it more in preparation for our getting new pups this summer, haven't actually had a dog here to try it out on more properly, so I'm not sure that I'm a good one to ask about it actually working. But it's a good read if you're interested in learning more about your dog I think. It was recommended by the livestock guardian list serve I"m part of.
