Reviews
"After a merry-go-round life, Bill's memoir as the father of his adopted son is... Engaging. Powerful." -Amity Buxton, author - The Other Side of the Closet: The Coming-Out Crisis for Straight Spouses and Families "Bill Jones made history when he became the first single man in the world to adopt a child. But Bill harbored a secret that threatened to undo his powerful desire to become a father. This is the heartwarming story of Bill's incredible journey. You'll find it hard to put down." -John J. Geoghegan, author - Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow: A True Story of Love, Hearing Loss, Heartbreak and Redemption "BACHELOR FATHER by Bill W. Jones is a beautifully written memoir. Reading his story of the adoption of a child that other people did not want restores my faith that this planet can be a beautiful place. BACHELOR FATHER will warm your heart, make you laugh and heal you. I stand up and cheer!" -Diane Frank, teacher, publisher, poet, and author - Mermaids and Musicians "Bill Jones writes from his heart, weaving his memories into a compelling, brave memoir that makes us laugh, weep, rage, and cheer. He takes us through his childhood, clouded by loss, and onto his quest-sometimes outrageous, always courageous-to adopt a child, and finally tells of his complex life with his beloved son. BACHELOR FATHER is an absorbing, unforgettable story." -Elinor Gale, editor and author - The Emancipation of Emily Rosenbloom
Synopsis
On February 13, 1969, I signed adoption papers that immediately became a historical document. I am the first single man in America, and I believe, the world, to adopt a child through an authorized government agency-in this case, the San Francisco City and County Social Services Adoption Agency. My story was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, Associated Press, Family Health magazine, and became international news. Since that event, all 50 states have been changing their laws, for or against single parent adoption. My son, Aaron, and I were flown to New York to be on To Tell the Truth and to Philadelphia for The Mike Douglas Christmas Show, then to New York again in 1984 for The Phil Donahue Show.
