The little game that grew up!
Ogre Designers Edition from Steve Jackson Games shows that a great design is timeless. Originally produced in the late '70s as a microgame from the long defunct Metagaming, it set a standard for game play that influenced the entire industry. Here was a $2.95 game that fit into a ziplock bag with thin unpunched counters and simple rules that had tremendous playability and room for expansion. Over the years Steve Jackson did exactly that, releasing GEV which expanded the rules and maps and vehicle choices and made the little game quite fun for even die hard tactical wargamers. Over the years, SJ Games have dabbled in newer and more elaborate versions of the game with thick oversized counters, heavy cardboard maps, etc. Eventually a set with metal miniatures was released along with dedicated ... Ogre Designers Edition from Steve Jackson Games shows that a great design is timeless. But Ogre always seemed to never quite make the transition to a full blown boxed game. Game aids were frequently either printed on the back of the box or not as separate sheets. It was as if SJ kept thinking his "baby" was still a little $2.95 toy rather than a serious game. Well finally with the help of some very generous kick start contributors, SJ Games released the kind of game that was over the top. A massive boxed edition with large heavy cardboard maps and some three D cardboard counters for the Ogres and buildings. All kinds of map overlays are available to customize the maps and we finally get those long awaited player aids like charts and record sheets for the Ogres. You can even download rules expansions for new vehicles or troop types. Scenario books are planned along with a PC based version of the game (I am waiting with bated breath for this one). Steve Jackson has been upfront about this edition. It was a once in the lifetime fulfillment of a wargamers dream and it will not be re-printed. Smaller boxed versions of the game will incorporate many of this edition's features though and with the ability to download pdfs, most gamers will be content to buy the smaller version (edition 6 I believe that is out at time of writing). Fior me, it is an indulgence for a 60+ old guy who got back into gaming via Metagaming little micros. Me, I'm lucky to have snagged a copy at a great price. Thanks Steve for a job well done!

Great game, badly packed for shipment
The plastic box insert cracked in multiple places, and the box cover corner was split. (This may have been caused by a packing error ahead of shipment: the punch-board sheets are supposed to be strapped to the outside of the box, instead of being forced under the cover.) The game itself is excellent, and the value of everything contained is wonderful!
