Senegalese master Ousmane Sembene's MOOLAADE is a powerful, life-affirming work of art. Tackling the controversial subject of female circumcision, the octogenarian master uses his humane approach to tell this deeply moving tale. Set in a modern African village, the film begins when several soon-to-be-cut children seek refuge at the home of Colle (Fatoumata Coulibaly), a determined woman who several years before rejected the Islamic order of having her daughter circumcised. Although Colle's traditional, domineering husband fiercely opposes her actions, Colle protects the frightened children regardless. Meanwhile, a young villager returns from Paris, where he is scheduled to marry Colle's daughter. But when it is revealed that this daughter never suffered through the ritual, his father and elders forbid his marriage to her. As Colle's period of "Moolaade" (protection) ends and the children are returned to their mothers, the film builds to its thrilling climax.With MOOLAADE, Sembene has delivered a message about the current African dilemma: how to reconcile its past without being swallowed up by the modern world in which it is forced to exist. Sembene's extreme sensitivity has resulted in this deeply moving celebration of humanity.This film screened in the 42nd New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
