Product Information

The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

A classic for the ages.
Classic romance and adventure set in world war one colonial Africa. Bogie at his best in an uncharacteristic role. Hepburn and Bogart play well off each other and any fan of either of these screen greats will love this film. Romance, drama, action, excellent on-location film work, and character development that is rare in the films of today. It's hard to find anything not to like about this film, it is truly a classic for all time!

Highly Recommend!
The movie is excellent! Hepburn and Bogart shine in this film, and though there are some instances where the story drags, it really is an excellent film! Highly recommend it! In addition, this Commemorative Edition came with some excellent additions, among them actual scenes that showed how the film was made in color at the time of its production, and a book from Hepburn herself about the movie's filming. Great for any collector!
