Founding father John Adams and his wife, Abigail, shared one of the most intriguing partnerships in U.S. history. Married in 1764, the couple was frequently separated by John's integral role in the establishment of a fledgling nation (which included persuading Congress to declare independence and serving as the second president), during which time they sustained their marriage through prolific personal correspondence. This episode of PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE series explores John and Abigail's complex relationship through readings from their over 1000 letters; interviews with historians David McCullough, Joanne Freeman, and Joseph Ellis; and dramatic re-creations starring actors Simon Russell Beale and Linda Emond.
