Reviews
"The story works well as a joyful read-aloud while preparing for Sukkot or at any time of the year." -- Michal Hoschander Malen, Jewish Book Council, "The new illustrations are indeed a delightful improvement and will allow this fine book a deserved second life." -- Lisa Silverman, Co-editor, Children's and Teen Literature, AJL News and Reviews, AJL Newsletter, "Young Hillel loves to build houses to play in and uses whatever supplies he can find to indulge in this favorite activity. A huge cardboard box makes a perfect playhouse, and a pile of pillows becomes an excellent make-believe fort. A tree house provides outdoor fun, and even nestling under his father's talit while they are in synagogue feels cozy and warm as it evokes the feeling of a comfortable home. But every time Hillel tries to snuggle up in his very own house, a holiday seems to interfere with his plans. He can't light Hanukkah candles safely in a cardboard box and his mother needs to use the pillows for her guests to lean on during the Passover Seder; something prevents him from playing in his personal house at every turn of the calendar page. Having his own house just doesn't seem to be a workable plan. He is disappointed time and again. Finally, the holiday of Sukkot arrives and Hillel realizes to his joy that Sukkot is the perfect holiday for house building. He and his father happily build their family sukkah, a temporary hut with a natural roof in which Jews reside during the holiday to commemorate the huts their ancestors built in the desert on their way from slavery to freedom. Hillel can decorate the sukkah, share meals with his family inside its walls, and thoroughly enjoy the delights of the season. The right holiday and the right house come together in a perfect merging of tradition and fun. Sukkot is the ideal holiday for building a house. This brand new edition of an old favorite has all new color artwork which gives the story a fun, contemporary, humorous twist. The story works well as a joyful read-aloud while preparing for Sukkot or at any time of the year." -- Michal Hoschander Malen, Jewish Book Council, "The book has positive Jewish content and is appropriate for its intended audience of young children aged three to six." -- Laurie Adler, Syndey Taylor Shmooze Blog, "A book that introduces readers to many Jewish holidays celebrated throughout the year. Hillel Builds a House, written by Shoshana Lepon and illustrated by Angeles Ruiz, is the story of a young boy determined to build a house for a Jewish holiday. The story begins at Hanukkah. Hillel builds a cardboard house in the living room, but his mom says he can't light his menorah in it. He is determined to build a house for Purim and, indeed, crafts a house for his costume. Sadly, it rains and he has to wear his costume from last year. Each holiday winds up in disaster until it is Sukkot, the perfect holiday for building a house! With colorful illustrations and text that highlights one or two traditions for each holiday, Hillel Builds a House is the perfect book to read, and reread, throughout the year. A glossary is included, to further define the holiday features, making this a book that will appeal to ages 4-8." -- Marcia Berneger, San Diego Jewish World, "Hillel Builds a House is the perfect book to read, and reread, throughout the year." -- Marcia Berneger, San Diego Jewish World

Synopsis
All year, Hillel builds treehouses and forts. His structures--in the backyard, under the stairs and even in the living room--can get in the way when the family is busy with holiday preparations. As the Jewish holidays come and go throughout the year, Hillel can't seem to find the right one for his building projects. That is, until fall comes, and with it the holiday of Sukkot, the Jewish harvest holiday, which is all about building a temporary structure, called a sukkah. Hillel puts all his practice building to work as he helps his father use boards, branches and decorations to create the family sukkah.
