It is suitable for shooting subjects that are difficult to get close to, such as shooting from a distance so as not to surprise insects or small animals. The focus is sharp, the blur is beautiful, and the whole image is depicted in rich gradation.
This lens is insanely sharp and the build quality is second to none, but it is very difficult to use. The sharpness of the lens is better then pretty much everything else I’ve used, and it takes teleconverters with minimal impact to its image quality. It is much sharper then the 100 2.8L is but due to the heavy weight and no image stabilizer in combination with its long focal length makes handheld macro very hard. Also traditional diffusion technique for macro photography does not work because the working distance is so much longer. I’ve had good luck using bounce cards to get light onto the subject. I shoot with a 5dsr with a battery grip, and with this lens and a flash it’s a handful at times and i would recommend a tripod. I’ve found this lens to be my first choice for still life on small subjects because I have more space to put various lighting vs my 100mm
This may be the sharpest lens that Canon made, except for a few giant telephotos.
Macro capability is a bonus. The lens hood is thin plastic, so not that durable.
