Finely detailed, but difficult to assemble
This water tower kit is finely detailed, and a very nice addition to an industrial setting on your model railroad. However, although there are only about 50+ parts in this kit, I found it to be one of the more difficult kits to assemble. The problem area is the tower legs. The legs must be canted inward and turned at a 45 degree angle when installing the cross support beams. There is no locking design, and if the correct angle is not maintained the supports will not be aligned and the wire stringers will not reach their tie in locations. I deviated from the instructions and after first building the support legs I set them in the base without gluing and used that to loosely maintain leg angles while adding the cross beams. In all I spent an inordinate amount of time on the legs , beams, and cross wires. I think this kit would have been a lot more satisfying if some sort of leg assembly fixture had been included. I am very happy with the finished product, but not so much with the hassle and amount of time it took to get the support structure assembled. I like to build my own structures, but in this one case I would opt for the ready assembled version offered by Walthers.Read full review

Great looking model, but difficult to assemble. Instructions are lacking in detail.
Very nicely detailed model, but very tedious and time consuming to put together. Instructions and illustrations are lacking in detail of exactly in which position the 12 braces should be glued to the vertical supports. It would have been nice if the instruction included a magnified illustration of the support braces in the proper position. Also it's very difficult to glue the 32 tiny wire braces in place. Unless you just want an unpainted water tower model and are up to the challenge, I would suggest that you purchase a completed model - they sell for only a few more dollars than the kit.
