This album really helps the fan of Genesis music follow their development as musicians and composers. The addition of guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer/vocalist Phil Collins is instantly noticeable from the earlier two albums. The compositions take on an edgier and more mature quality while the musicianship is greatly improved as well. Tony Banks expands his tonal experimentation on the organ while adding stings and voices from the Mellotron. This album was released prior to the use of synthesizers for the most part, but Mike Rutherford does use the Taurus bass pedals. I believe this is the last album Tony banks is listed as playing 12 string guitar as well. You cab definitely hear Peter Gabriels' vocals becoming more animated along with more intricately woven counter melodies and background harmonies. If you're a fan of Genesis music and wish to follow their evolution to the masterpiece "Lamb" album, then this is a must have for your collection.Read full review
So thrilled with the quality of this CD and the fast shipment. I was looking for older Genesis CDs that weren't remastered. This CD was a great value and sounds amazing.

Released in November, 1971, this is first "really good" Genesis album, featuring Phil Collins's snappy drumming and him singing solo on "For Absent Friends." I'm a fan of earlier original music of major rock groups--including those from the UK and art rock (i.e Genesis, YES, etc) from the 1960's and 70's. If you like Genesis, make sure your HAVE this album!!!!!
