Additional Information
Picked up after a well-received showing at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is a low-budget comedy about a family road trip from Albuquerque to California. The story begins when young Olive (Abigail Breslin) is given a shot at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant, and manages to coerce her family into driving west in their worn-down VW van. Olive's father Richard (Greg Kinnear) heads up the trip, while mother Sheryl (Toni Collette), brother Dwayne (Paul Dano), uncle Frank (Steve Carell), and grandfather (Alan Arkin) all come along for the ride. What follows resembles a modestly-budgeted version of PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES: seemingly endless--and hilarious--mishaps befall the family as they wind their way across the country. Couple this with the witty interplay between a well-drawn set of dysfunctional characters, and that's the LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE formula in a nutshell; all the audience needs to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. The grainy texture of co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris's film may initially startle viewers unaccustomed to the indie film world but it's a testament to the cast and crew's efforts that the limitations imposed on the filmmakers are long forgotten by the end of the film. Any concerns about visual murkiness give way to belly laughs and bemusement as the road trip ends and the beauty pageant begins. Likely to have a broad appeal, Dayton and Faris' film resembles a version of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION directed with the pithy eye of Todd Solondz (WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE), and it's to the movie's credit that it manages to successfully marry these two seemingly disparate worlds.
Reviews
Daily Mail - The funniest comedy of the year by many a mile, Sunday Times - Once in a while, a film turns up that has something really special. Little Miss Sunshine is exactly that, The Sun - Hilarious, straight from the heart and totally unmissable

  • Little Miss Sunshine

A very clever, though at times childish (in a good way!) laugh out loud film, following a family heading to their little girls beauty pageant in the US. Plenty of twisted humour and a hysterical ending make it a must see. Bought as a presnt for my girlfriend, but equally suited as a 'bloke film' too.

  • Ridiculously Overrated

I have to admit, I was drawn to this movie because of the great cast and a lot of positive word of mouth. I watched the movie in a very good mood and when it was over, I said, what is the big deal? I did not laugh, I did not cry, I did not feel anything, except that I had seen this movie a dozen or more times already. It really was nothing special. Arkin's comedic performance was a rehashed role that I have seen others play. I remember a film called "Flirting With Disaster" which was kind of a road movie as well, it was better than this. "Raising Arizona" was much funnier than this. The so-called side-splitting ending with the dance to Super Freak was so tipped in commercials that you knew what was coming. Moreover, the dance just keeps going and going, it got so tedious and unfunny.

  • LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

I LOVE THIS FILM ITS A GREAT LOOK AT A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY EVEN THOUGH THE CHARACTERS AND SITUATIONS ARE A LITTLE STRETCHED YOU STILL SYMPATHIZE AND I FOUND MYSELF LAUGHING OUT LOUD A LOT. IF YOU GET A CHANCE ITS WORTH WATCHING

  • Comedy at its best.

I first watched this because of my love of volkswagen camper, but the movie just the characters grab you and don't let go until you fall of the couch laughing. The end scene is the most bizarre and disturbing pieces of comedy ever.

  • little miss sunshine is top knotch

Pretty much one of the best films ever, heartwarming and hilarious. Filmed beautifully like each scene is a painting. Cant pin point a favourite bit because everything in this film is relevent.
