Writer-director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, who as Hammer & Tongs have made music videos for such groups as Fatboy Slim, Supergrass, Blur, and REM, follow up their 2005 film, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, with the charming indie SON OF RAMBOW, a love letter to the movies. A success at such festivals as Toronto and Sundance, SON OF RAMBOW stars Bill Milner as Will Proudfoot, a shy, reserved young boy who is different from the other kids because his family is part of the Brethren, a religion that shuns the outside world, not allowing him to have friends at school or to watch television. While in the hallway in school one day because he can't watch an educational film in class, Will gets into a fight with Lee Carter (Will Poulter), a tough kid who gets into trouble all the time. Lee forces Will to help him make a homemade version of the Sylvester Stallone film FIRST BLOOD, but after watching the original, Will is captivated by the movie and writes his own sequel, casting himself as the son of Rambow (he misspells the name of the character). Will and Lee use their imagination and lots of grit to get the project off the ground, bonding as only blood brothers can. But soon the entire school wants to participate in the movie, including ultra-cool French exchange student Didier Revol (Jules Sitruk), jeopardizing the integrity of the production as well as Will and Lee's growing friendship. Milner and Poulter, both making their feature-film debuts, are engaging as the lead characters. Jennings sets SON OF RAMBOW in the 1980s, before cell phones, digital cameras, and YouTube changed the way people communicate. Amid a soundtrack that includes music from such seminal period bands as The Cure and Depeche Mode, the two young boys learn about family and friendship, jealousy and ego as their carefully controlled worlds threaten to implode.

    Exceeded expectations

    When I saw the trailer for this film, it looked like another corny British comedy. The film itself is much, much better than that, as someone else has said it feels more like a Michael Gondry film. Very idiosyncratic, quirky and confident in what it does, with many laugh-out-loud moments. What I enjoyed most of all was how some really nice themes and subplots started to innocently dovetail with the story, never feeling contrived, or overly sentimental. There were some great touches where the writer/director chose to imply or suggest something without going overboard - which makes for a much more warming experience than the usual obvious and clunky approach in British screen writing. The acting was superb. This film will appeal to many, many people for different reasons - I just hope they ...

    Son of Rambow is priceless

    wonderful movie. it takes me back to childhood. reminding me not just of the fun, but of the challenges, problems, and heartaches and how rewarding it was to overcome them. but, mostly of the fun.

    Not as simple as it would seem...

    This completely original film is a real winner! It was excellently directed, written and stylized. The cast (mostly consisting of children) was fantastic. Will Poulter especially has a great deal of talent. Son Of Rambow is one of my new favorites and I recommend an immediate watch!

    Cute and whitty!

    So adorable, whitty, and even heartwarming. I thought it was a funny film that will be absolutely perfect for fans of Rushmore or Stand By Me. I didn't think I would like it, but it is actually a really good film. It has a cute plot about friendship and adventure, and I think you'd like it. It's definately a feel good film.

    kudos for son of rambow

    this film was one of the most pleasant suprises of my movie experiences this year. i went with little or no expectations and i was so caught up in the characters and story that i hated for it to end. i have been so disappointed in the major film studios releases for the past couple of years that when a film of this quality comes out it is so wonderful that i want to keep my faith that there are more like it out there. the star of this movie has now released a new movie with michael caine called "is anyone there" that is worth seeing also.
