About this product

Product Information

A nuanced and comprehensive view of the musical and cultural phenomenon of the Jamaican dancehall. It examines its growth and historical role within Jamaican society, its economy of star-making, its technology of production, its performative practices, and its capacity to channel political beliefs through popular culture in ways that are urgent, tangible and lasting. The book includes extensive interviews, original photographs and anthropological analysis from 18 months of fieldwork in Kingston. Norman C. Stolzoff argues that this popular musical genre expresses deep conflicts within Jamaican society, not only along lines of class, race, gender, sexuality and religion but also between different factions struggling to gain control of the island nation's political culture. As his argument unfolds, Stolzoff traces the history of Jamaican music from its roots in the late-18th century to 1945, from the addition of sound systems and technology during the mid-forties to early sixties, and finally through the post-independence years from the early sixties to the end of the 20th century.

Fantastic seller! My item took longer than normal to arrive but that's due to them sending me the wrong dvd. Not to worry though, I contacted them and they arranged for the correct dvd to be sent out. My item has now arrived and the dvd was in excellent condition (brand new as described) and it was very well packaged. I would also like to say that the value for money is excellent. I highly recommend this seller, thank you so much! The issue with the wrong dvd was quickly rectified .

Book arrived safely packaged in perfect order. Item as described, new. Thank you Rarewaves Outlet. Fascinating book, great addition to my collection. Great price. Would recommended this seller. No communication needed with seller, so don't know what to rate with regards to communication (please dont take lack of feedback on this matter as a negative). Thanks again.

This vinyl is really reasonably priced and I love that it is one of the more unusual colours. It arrived well packaged, undamaged and looks as described. It arrived late, due to Royal Mail's Festive rush, but was dispatched by the seller really quickly. When I contacted them to ask where it was, they replied really quickly with a helpful solution. Such good customer service, so strongly recommend. Really happy with my purchase.
