About this product

Product Information

Robert Altman's brilliant, sprawling masterpiece paints a detailed portrait of the people and music industry of Nashville, Tennessee. Made in 1975, one year before the celebration of the American Bicentennial, the film can also be viewed as a metaphor for the state of American politics and culture of the time. Altman's roaming camera follows a group of disparate individuals as the city prepares for an upcoming political rally for "Replacement" party candidate Hal Philip Walker. They include a ditzy Californian who's visiting her dying aunt and downtrodden uncle, a philandering rock star and his bandmates, a country singer on the verge of a nervous breakdown, a tone-deaf waitress with dreams of superstardom, a mother with two deaf children, and a British journalist who is out to capture the "true" Nashville. The characters intersect at the beginning of the film after a highway accident, and again at the end when an act of violence tarnishes the political rally. Altman's improvisational approach lends itself perfectly to the film's subject matter, which allows the actors to freely develop their personas. Another bold decision was to incorporate songs written by the actors themselves (Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy" won an Oscar for Best Song). This unorthodox style adds a satirical humor and brave honesty to NASHVILLE, making it one of American cinema's crowning achievements.

One of my favorites films of the 1970’s. Unusual film with many layers.

I originally saw this film in the 1970’s when it was released. I really liked it then and I still like it now. There are a lot of layers to it. It has humor, drama, musical entertainment, social commentary etc etc.. I would recommend it. (It was one of Pauline Kael’s favorites).

  • Top critical review

Just got slapped on the chic.

2-1/2 hours of annoyance. Kept waiting for something worthwhile or funny to happen but found myself increasingly frustrated. Not one peaceful moment in the entire movie. Felt like I was trying to make sense of comments made among a throng of noisy people in what seemed to be every scene. If the music was halfway decent the flick might have even been enjoyable. And the music was definitely not the Nashville sound. The songs were as out-of-tune as the movie.

  • Great film, very prescient

I was fortunate to do some of the publicity for this film when it was released. I lived the film and hadn’t seen it in decades as it never seems to play on tv. The quality of the dvd is excellent as well.

  • UGHHHHHHH!

VERY BORING! I tried to give it a chance, but after a while I couldn't take it anymore. As one review stated, the music and the singing were terrible. I finally had to fast-forward through the songs. The plot was not engaging at al. Not worth buying or much less watching!

  • Good movie, great music

Fine engaging movie, very brave for its time; good acting, great music. I did notice what I hadn't when I saw the movie in the theater in the '70s--every female is a victim.
