My bios was set to raid so had to set it to ide. Vista loaded after that. It didn't accept my computers product key as my version of Vista was different from the version on the hard drive. The hard drive version of Vista ran anyway without a product key. Online now so it'll do what I want it to do. £15 isn't bad for a 500gb drive and a usuable Vista.
