The history of The Guv'nor and successor pedals the Blues Breaker, Drive Master (Said to have the same circuitry as The Guv'nor but repackaged) and Shred Master is available elsewhere. Getting one of these pedals, especially an old Guv'nor, that WORKS is the problem. This is the second, failing pedal I've bought in the last week. When it's connecting inside it is truly awesome. Massive sound with its lovely 3 tone controls which allow boosted bass or scooped mids (metal) or whateve one wants, unlike the common "tone" knobs. Gain goes from barely discernable to stunningly delicious raunch, ripping sheets. Way unlike over a dozen more modern pedals I've tried, it does not just make a lot of chatter or fuzz when gain goes up. With my short scale bass, low notes are defined, not fuzzed out mess. Fabulous, best-of-all overdrive. But are there any being sold which function properly? I'm hoping so, because I just bought acouple others!Read full review

I bought the Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 distortion (not the classic Guv'nor pictured next to this review). After 20 years of faithful service, my Classic pedal was starting to give me some extraneous noise. Since I loved its sound, I wanted to stay with the Marshall brand if possible, and found the updated GV-2 on ebay. Here's my reaction to the GV-2. It has all the same basic controls as the original Guv'nor, plus an extra low-end EQ knob. The EQ knobs are dual, so you get all the control in only four knob spaces instead of five. This allows the unit to be more slender than the original, more the size of most other stomp boxes on the market. The GV-2's ionput and output jacks are on each side, as opposed to being located on the top edge as on the Classic model. The styling is unique, retro, sleek, seems a little Art Deco, but the construction is heavy and sturdy. Now for the sound: This is like the Classic pedal only better. The low end goes hugely fat if you want it to, allowing amazing power crunches. The gain knob allows you to select from a full range of distortion intensity. The four-band EQ gives it an incredible range of sounds. The overall sound is a clean, strong distortion, and the nuances are up to you. The people I play with all noticed the difference in tone, sustain, and clarity, and are all favorably impressed. I rely on this unit for most of my playing, and it supports me totally. For the price I paid, I can't imagine a better value. I honestly don't know what you could improve on with this box. I am, as you can probably tell, 100% satisfied. It's too bad that Marshall is not producing these beauties any more.Read full review
I learned about this pedal watching my favorite YouTuber Dave Simpson. It really sounds like a marshall since my lead 15 is a one channel amp this adds the distortion. It's really like a higher gain overdrive than a distortion but it's even better with a tube screamer or fuzz/distortion added to it and I love it by itself as well. I like to combine effects processors along with my stomp boxes for a variety of sounds and convenience

Amazing. Anything from adding slight reverb to your clean to turning it dirty and metal is at your fingertips. I bought it to get a cranked tube but mostly clean sound which it absolutely does. What surprised me was how chunky it can get when you dime the gains.

The main thing I like about this pedal is the ability to change your tone greatly and quickly using the 4 tone knobs. Plus it says Marshall and looks cool! Keep The Music Alive. Toddeagle7

Folks, I'm blown away by how easy it is to dial good tone from this thing. I use TS9 with Keeley mod, using BurrBrown chip. It is easy to dial good tone from the TS9. By conrast, TS9 has somewhat muted high end and less tight bottom than Gov'nor. TS9 also seems more violin-like, less aggressive, than Gov'Nor. I use John Nau Spoonful, with 4558D chip. It is easy to get 'sweet' midrange, and slight overdriven tone. By contrast, Spoonful seems to keep favoring midrange vs wider spectrum from Gov'Nor. And certainly spoonful has a lot less distortion. I used (no longer) Boss Metal Zone MT-2 stock. It was hard to avoid getting ice picks, or nasal, or boomy. Yes, MT-2 had more distortion than Gov'nor, but not nearly as controllable. I used (no longer) Marshall Gov'Nor 2 stock. I had to hunt for good tone in that pedal, by contrast to original Gov'nor, where I have to hunt for bad tone. That's the contrast-and-compare. Cost? I paid 225. Yea, I paid 80 bucks too much. I knew that. I wanted this specific one, from this vendor. I could have also gotten clones cheaper. Instead, I wanted to get as close to Gary Moore's sound on Still Got the Blues. Now that I can push a 66 JTM or a 1972 SLP with '68 clone board, I get really, really close. Nah, I can't play like Gary. never will. But every now and then, I can follow his recordings pretty dang close. This is a pedal I will keep 'till I croak, and pass it on to my kid. // queasyRiderRead full review

I bought one of these old Guvnor pedals a few years ago and it’s been one of my favourite Marshall in A Box Pedals. This isn’t the little gold stomp box. It’s one of the older, bigger stompboxes from the late 80’s or early 90’s.

Been using this pedal for 20 years. Gave it away but had to buy one back. It's my comfort food pedal. The alchemy mod make a nice difference in clarity so the deep control gets you pretty darn close to a 412 bottom I a 112.

Still experimenting with the controls but it provides a wide pallet of tones, from a warm overdrive to searing Marshal tone. Take your time and you can find "your" sound.
