I saw Box of Moonlight in the early 2000s and loved it. Directed by Tom Di Cillo, starring John Turturro Sam Rockwell Catherine Keener and Lisa Blount the movie is about the way life works to open your eyes. On an out of town job Al Fountian (Turturro) finds a grey hair which sends his world into a spin. When the job finishes prematurely Al takes the opportunity to go searching for his childhood by way of a lake at which he used to holiday. Along the way he meets the Kid (Rockwell) who has steadfastly refused himself admission into adulthood. Through this unusual friendship and the adventures that accompany it Al rediscovers a part of himself long missing. Two aspects of the film really stood out to me. I well recall my own state of desolation and lostness as part of the work a day world. The sense of freedom and joy that the kid brought to the friendship is palpable and reminds me of my newly discovered hope for a way out after spending time with offbeat characters. At the end of the movie there is a delightful twist where Al realises that there were hidden depths to the Kid and the care that he showed for him. I sent this DVD to my march-in-time ex-American girlfriend presently back in the US. Primarily I just wanted her to share my enjoyment but there was also a message or two in there which she might just pick up on.Read full review
First off, Sam Rockwell can do no wrong in my opinion. He's a true talent and is an asset to the movie industry. I've been trying to add this movie to my "Sam Rockwell" collection and wasn't having any luck until I came across it on Ebay. God bless EBay! This movie is truly charming. It's one of those films that touches your heart. The performances from John Tuturro and Sam Rockwell are outstanding. Sam is simply at his best in this film. You really could believe a friendship can develop between an outcast and a electrical engineer. This film is a rollercoaster of emotions. You'll be laughing at one point and crying at the next. If you love indie films, you will adore this movie. The movie is rated R for language, drinking, nudity and sexual content. (Didn't bother me at all.)
I originally caught this movie about half way through on The Independant Film Channel (DirecTv channel 550). I finished watching it and I knew I HAD to catch it again from the beginning! Sam Rockwell and John Turturro were born to play these parts! The music and simple, but great effects make this movie even better. Sometimes I think that Kid, Played by Sam Rockwell, has the right idea about life! For some crazy reason, I would have to say that this is my favorite movie. I hope you enjoy it also!
This offbeat buddy comedy starring John Turturro and Sam Rockwell, isn't quite like anything you're likely to have seen. Turturro, a foreman on a job away from home, is going slowly insane, seeing things backwards (such as a child riding a bike or a glass of water being "unpoured"), when the job is cancelled. Finding himself with time on his hands, he decides to take a little drive, and from there things take off. He meets Rockwell on the side of the road where his car had broken down, and an amusing and unique comedy ensues.
Love this movie to escape into warm Fourth of July. Great characters, zany sense of humor, beautiful scenery and Great Music.

I am a HUGE fan of John Turturo, but by seeing this movie, the deal was sealed for me! Probably his best lead acting role. Watch it, if you aren't already, you'll be a fan, too, and will want to see more of John Turturo! (he is VERY under-rated as an actor, in my opinion)
What an amazing and under appreciated gem of a film. Sam Rockwell is the best!

How simple, honest, lighthearted and focused the storyline is. It reminds you of where the true magic in life really is.
I saw this movie years ago on HBO, and I was pleased that it is now available on DVD. The interaction between the two major characters and the resulting changes in one of them makes this an very interesting movie.
