Die imposante Geschlossenheit der stilisierenden Richtung, die sich auf Ingres, Chasseriau, Puvis de Chavanne, Maurice Denis aufbaut, tauscht uber ihre Bedeutung. Ihre Kultur, so hoch man sie anschlagen mag, verdeckt nicht den Kompromiss, dem alle diese Kunstler mit voller UEberzeugung dienen. Wohl durchtrankten sie ihn mit vielerlei zeitgenoessischen Elementen. Ihre Grundtendenz aber, die prinzipielle Anlehnung an uberlieferte Formen, stellte sich dem Manetschen Ideal der Contemporaneite\ entgegen und vermochte nicht, die Freiheit des Instinktes zu ersetzen, die der grossen Kunst des letzten Drittels des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts den Charakter gab. Auf den Impressionismus konnte rationellerweise, um nicht die Resultate in Frage zu stellen, immer nur eine Stroemung reagieren, die keine fremden Elemente in die Diskussion zog, sondern die Synthese aus demselben Geiste gewann, der die Aufloesung begunstigte. Diese Stroemung, die durch Gauguin zu einer Art Schule gebildet wurde, fand in van Gogh ihren freiesten, gesundesten und starksten Ausdruck. Dass es ein Auslander war, der diesen Schluss zog, gibt der Tat einen besonderen Charakter, auch wenn man sich erinnert, dass Holland und Frankreich in der Malerei stets eng verschwistert gewesen sind.\ [...] Julius Meier-Graefe beschreibt in seinem vorliegenden Werk das Leben des bedeutenden niederlandischen Malers Vincent van Gogh. This vinyl is really reasonably priced and I love that it is one of the more unusual colours. It arrived well packaged, undamaged and looks as described.
