Expensive but worth the investment. I am a die hard Nero Wolfe fan, and I might have made some different casting choices here and there and I wouldn't have had Wofle YELLING so much, but overall, this is a faithful redition of (too few of) the stories Stout wrote. I wish there had been many more seasons than two. Hutton does a good job of capturing Archie's insousiance and the interplay with Wolfe is good. Fritz in the book is not as haughty as he is played, but he still is good. It's interesting that the same small troupe of players is cast in so many different roles, sometimes more than one per episode, and at first that was disconcerting, but then it became fun to identify them in their different roles and disguises.I would recommed that everyone order the complete book series (one ebay?) and THEN watch these episodes, but even without that, and even without being a die hard fan, this series is fun to watch.Read full review

Nero Wolf is an excellent detective series. Interesting characters, good plots and the 1950s setting also contributes to the interest. Both lead actors are great to watch. Someone gave me the 2nd season, and I enjoyed it so much, I bought the first.

Review Title of Nero Wolfe first Edition in Color – 03 July 08 With Rex Stout, Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin. This DVD series is a detective stores that is set in the thirties and forties. It is a witty, Beguiling, Colorful, pulse-pounding (PG) drama’s. It is Imperious and mysterious were Nero Wolfe always gets his man, Nero Wolfe (Rex Stout) is a natural for Television DVD series. There is one of fiction’s great partnerships; Nero Wolfe is a brilliant recluse whose world is dominated by his formidable appetites and beloved orchid collection. Archie Goodwin is his stalwart legman, - a dapper, street smart sleuth who uncovers the clues that let Wolfe unravel the most confounding mysteries without ever leaving his Manhattan brownstone home. I purchased Nero Wolfe’s DVD set of stories (complete first season) because I love the character. His stories are unique, hold my attention and I can watch them a million times and never get bored. They are intense, very articulate (like the star actor), and positively fascinating … to me! Nero Wolfe is a fictional detective and his role was created in the early 30’s. All his stories are narrated by Archie Goodwin, the stories central character and Wolfe’s confidential assistant. Wolfe has expensive tastes and lives in a luxurious and comfortable New York City brownstone. This awesome house has three floors: a rooftop greenhouse which is all climate-controlled, for his orchids (which he spends four hours a day tending their needs) and Wolfe touts himself as a recognized amateur orchid grower. The brownstone house also has a small elevator which is exclusively for Wolfe’s use, a timer-activated window-opening device that regulates the temperature in his bedroom, and an alarm system that sounds his confidential assistant (Archie), if someone approaches Wolfe’s bedroom door. Wolfe also employs three live-in staff to take care of all his needs. Along with reading, good food is the keystone of Wolfe’s leisured existence. He is served breakfast in bed in his yellow silk pajamas, and lunch and dinner at set times in his formal dining room, with much pomp and circumstance. Wolfe, along with being a gourmet, also has an unquenchable thirst for beer, and enjoys his ritual of pouring the beer into a glass and letting the foam settle to an appropriate level, before drinking. He also keeps the bottlecaps in a desk drawer as a means of tracking his daily/weekly consumption. He may be eccentric, but he does it with style and class. In every story, Wolfe solves the mystery by considering the facts brought to him by Archie and others, and the replies to questions he himself asks of the suspects. Nero Wolfe gets an A++++ in my book on detective story entertainment!Read full review
Rex Stout is one of my favorite authors. Thanks to my mother, I was introduced to his Nero Wolf mysteries in the 1980s. This TV series faithfully represents the books. Still, as with all things between books and TV or movies, the books are much richer. Still, it's great to see the characters come to life.

The Nero Wolfe mysteries, with Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin, is a very well done presentation of the Rex Stout detective stories. This production has Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin, Maury Chaykin as Nero Wolfe and uses a recurring group actors that play different characters in different episodes. The stories are interesting, mostly non violent and well acted. Nero Wolfe, a genius, solves crimes with out leaving his office, except on rare occasions. Archie Goodwin does with leg work and acts as Nero's right hand man. Nero always seems to solve the crime just in time to trump his rival, Inspector Cramer. If you like detective stories that are not overly violent and that are clever, this is a good series to watch.

My mom is the one who actually started watching the show years ago, on A&E, and now she reads the books by Rex Stout. I bought this season one set for her on Mothers Day, she loves it.
